Voters Remorse It¼s been a few weeks since the presidential election and the divisions between the electorate remain almost as intense as before. Not since the days of the Hatfield¼s and McCoy¼s, the feuding neighboring families, have discontent and division been so pervasive. You had to think twice to place a campaign sign on your lawn or even discuss politics with good friends and fellow work mates. Even today, friendships have been strained and family members are still unable to converse. Sound familiar? Chiropractors have been in-fighting like the Hatfields and McCoys since day one. Granted philosophical boundaries may define practice protocol but the mixer-straight battle has not changed the chiropractic landscape in the eyes of the general public or even the legislative powers that be. I¼ve been in practice since 1978 and through the years have read and heard tale of the chicken little syndrome with the sky falling from our insurance revenue to being restricted and made second class professional citizens. Considering our salmonesque survival mode, always traveling upstream against the current, it¼s no wonder that our patient per capita numbers have not appreciably increased. With all the hoopla between our restive camps, you¼d think that our public persona would be excellent and open many doors, but alas, it only divides rather than conquers. I haven¼t the solution for unity and probably a little division and soul searching is okay, but back handed fights and accusations from school to school and across state boards is ridiculous and manages to create a weakened professional front. With all the suspicions and horrid stories told from each camp it¼s no wonder that we are not growing and some not striving. Doctors, we have such a role to play in the matrix of healthcare, let¼s not blow it. We should concentrate on the similarities and spend less thought on the differences. We should speak out about the power of the adjustment and less time on who is or is not using therapy. So, as we approach the new year, I hope we¼ll find our way clear of each other, allowing an open field for our public to meet and greet us as we deserve. Without divisive voter¼s remorse.
