Q: Dr. M- A friend and myself are opening up an office on Long Island in the next few weeks. In the meantime we would like to do surveys and go door-to-door to get a feel for the community. I typed up a survey similar to the one in your book, but more condensed. Any suggestions as far as what to say or do to get people to give us their time, and ways to approach them. A: Thanks for your e-mail. Surveys should be short and sweet .. a little less than what is in my book so condensing and editing was a good idea. The purpose of the survey is simply to introduce yourself and a method to attract business and hopefully get them interested in office workshops .. an open house .. complimentary evaluations .. and getting them on your mailing list both snail and e-mail .. also don't forget to gather names and numbers of places both work .. church .. social to speak to .. they all have friends and employers. What to ask is rather simple .. introduce yourself as being the DC close by .. if possible hand them a wellness newsletter from your office .. provide them a menu of programs you will be offering .. ask them some easy questions as outlined in my book and gather the information above. You'll know within a few seconds if they will be playing along or not. Dr. Fernandez has a Practice Starters Program where he insists his clients interview via survey or just shaking hands with 3000 people even prior to open their office.
