Something New When was the last time you brought a new idea or piece of equipment into your practice? Many issues prevent forward progress in a doctors mind and office. It may be money .. complacency .. fear of change .. negative feedback from staff. Whatever your excuse .. I recommend you reconsider as change is healthy and may wind up being very profitable. If your concern is money .. give this some thought. Spending hard earned cash is difficult when funds are precious .. but money often begets more money when spent wisely. Have you ever attempted to implement marketing programs with your present staff and found that time restraints have left ideas on the table .. it may be time to hire a part time public relations assistant. If this person is able to generate continued new and referral patients .. how much is it worth? For sure the price for this effort will be well spent. If you neglected to purchase your dream table or equipment because funds were limited .. consider the personal power and conviction that follows the purchase. Consider the strength of resolve and the increased ability to generate interest with present and future patients .. how much would that be worth? The answer to practice burn out is something new .. a new technique .. new equipment .. new knowledge. I was reluctant for years to purchase and implement rehabilitative equipment and set aside a rehabilitation room in my office. I finally broke down .. spent the money and rearranged. The outcome are patients that are happy for the extra attention and service and an increased flow of profits for me .. profits that should have been accumulating for years. Change was healthy for the patient and my bank. You may have neglected change because of complacency. This is quite common for the successful clinic or the doctor with years of practice. Complacency is the beginning of rot. Look around your office .. see the table that needs repair .. the bathroom that could use an overhaul .. the reception area that is just plain and stale. A complacent DC looks and feels just like your office. Change is not an option just a concept in waiting. Open up and change both you and your staff which will lighten everything up .. your patients may even refer more often. You may have a fear of change. Change requires a side step or big leap beyond your comfort zone. Radical change may stimulate rejection and therefore pain. Moderate change requires knowledge and dissemination creating the need to articulate thought and it may hurt you. Minimal change may be the easy way but offers less dramatic results. So the only answer is to plan the changes and work the plan just Go For It. Comfort zones fit well with complacency and you know where that can get you. Change may present negative feedback from your staff or spouse. This alone is reason enough to change. Ideas on paper without follow through is just another thought left on the table. We need our staff to carry out ideas and not stifle them. Staff can restrain you or be the spark that rekindles the practice each day. If one or a few staff members always object to change then they may be your first consideration for change. Something new is most often the ticket to continued success.
