For sale Insight 7000 SEMG and Sam MKVII E-mail message this week .. safety net A number of years ago during the Regan presidency .. there was a phrase bantered around .. safety net. Although hard decisions had to be made politically and economically the concept was to leave no one behind .. a safety net would catch those direly in need. I look at every new patient and every examined and potentially new patient as direly in need of life sustaining and proactive preventive health and wellness assurance chiropractic care. But .. I like many of you .. have not established a strong and sustaining safety net to determine if any of these and their possible referrals dropped through. Oh .. that may not be entirely true .. I created many safety nets in the past but usually flimsy and porous. Many people .. patients .. have walked through my office doors and slipped right by us without our ever looking back. They may have been unimpressed with our excuse of a reorientation of the chiropractic way. They may have been unimpressed with our consultation or report of findings .. maybe they expected more but received less. You fill in your specific blanks .. what motivated people .. patients .. to walk by unimpressed during your screenings .. leaving your workshops dazed and unimpressed with your chiropractic message .. dropping out of care prior to your making a dent in their structural and neurological impairment .. dropping right through the safety net. A strong safety net requires one thing .. accountability. Whether you are a mom and pop facility or a multi doctor clinic .. have you established accountability of each new patient¼s service. Did you create a check off list of what each new patient deserves and needs .. which management procedures are mandatory .. responsible rules for you and the patient. Was homework provided the patient .. an exercise sheet .. lifestyle .. ergonomic .. nutritional considerations. Was financial and insurance concerns handled professionally .. was there ambiguity and doubt prior to the patient leaving. Do you maintain a new patient data sheet with recorded dates that are easily followed for statistical purposes. Do you keep statistics and build on success and tweak or dump failures. Do you have regular staff meetings enabling all to discuss their data sheets and make quick fixes when necessary. Is anyone accountable for all this or is your practice adrift awaiting the next lucky wind to allow it to go with the flow. Accountability .. the key word and adhesive that creates a strong unyielding net. New Patients are the lifeblood of our business .. referrals multiple it and proper procedures are the matrix that sustains it. Consider the numbers of people and potential patients you meet. Have you left behind a new idea and walked away .. discussed their need for care but allowed them to leave without a value of worth .. shifted the responsibility to your staff to fill in the blanks .. watch ambivalent and/or unknowing how to respond? Maintaining a practice is pure business sense. As I counsel new doctors with limited business skills .. I impress them with one huge thought .. Start Smart. Get your proverbial act together .. adjusting skills is a given it just needs practice .. desire is a given and propelled by survival .. examination skills are a given it just needs tweaking but business skills are not a given .. they must be acquired and dues have to be paid over time. A Smart Start insists that your professional safety net be strong and your staff be trained in service with little room for creativity until their skills are a given. It is not too late to rethink your practice protocols. Review every procedure for redundancy and inefficiency .. be assured your staff is skilled and well trained .. collect data on recent new patients and marketing programs .. can you account for everyone and every event? Do you have in place educational and referral programs? Begin today to create a solid and caring safety net .. be accountable for everyone and everything that is worth your degree and license.
