E-mail message this week .. profit and loss It didn't take a genius to make money in the stock market these past few years .. just throw in a few dollars and let it ride. Today .. even a crystal ball and watching 24 hours of CNBC ain't worth a flip. So tell me .. has your personal investments taken a hit? I would imagine so unless you have most of your funds in fixed income .. the slow .. methodical .. safer way towards financial growth. Sort of like the turtle and the hare. Don't panic .. this crisis too shall pass .. just hang in there. Profit and loss is a basic concept of business .. provide a service .. be paid .. repay your debts and cherish what's left. A sound business on a tight leash can review what is coming in and going out and tweak adjustments towards profit or at least minimize the losses. Throwing the dice at every turn is for Vegas only but too many of you do exactly that with your business decisions. If you want to have a hedge on the profit side of your business .. then first consider the possible results of each action taken. New doctors anxious to get started often choose the wrong location or a facility too large or small. They often make a purchase based on emotion or an aggressive vendor without consideration of their present need or ability to pay or be repaid. Their budget for promotion is stifled by their overwhelming debt that the mere thought of spending on the possibility makes the probability remote. Established doctors often return from seminars with renewed excitement and just enough knowledge to be dangerous. Without a coach making them accountable for this renewed spirit .. they return Monday morning with a whirlwind of ideas and staff demands that turmoil often results creating the opposite intention and another great idea that is closeted. So let's be honest .. is your bottom line near or below the bottom or are you profitable and accumulating wealth with happiness at a steady pace. Are you overstaffed and outgunned with debt and scant breathing room in sight? Is there promotional activity .. whether asking for referrals or a massive marketing campaign .. and what color is the ink from all your hard work .. red or black? Come on .. is it time to ditch some losers and try something new and/or just concentrate on the core of your business .. patients .. and grow profitably from within. Be accountable of every cent spent and have a plan for success .. don't be complacent or too stubborn to change. Business is business and sound business focuses on profits and minimizes the losses. What makes our business different is how quickly it can change. An inflexible doctor with little diversification of their patient base only creates havoc during hard times. Take a breath and slow down a second .. focus on the potential resource for profitable change and that is YOU. Imagine an out of body experience looking from the outside in. Be your own consultant and without fear or doubt offer yourself sound advice and plan the action steps regardless of your present comfort zones. Just for a moment live in the land of what now rather than what if. You can do it .. you can immediately and tastefully ask patients for referrals .. ask them if they can network you with their work or social groups for talks or screenings .. you can send simple letters to local professionals .. discuss wellness care with your present patients and offer them creative payment plans extending their care beyond relief and crisis .. create a marketing plan that is cost effective and much more. Our business is not anchored to the floor .. we are not dependent on the same monthly salary .. we can adjust our incomes the more we adjust spines. The fun towards profitability is in the trying.
