Plucking Fruit From a Tree Iım not going to berate anyone for breaking their resolutions already, itıs only been four days, but rather I would like to acknowledge anyone that at least attempted to set some goals for their New Year. Rarely are times available when we can regroup to either tweak or radically change our mode of practice to literally change our lot in life. As chiropractors, and usually self-sustainable business professionals, we have the ability to make as much money as we want or as little if this is your druthers. Personally, I side with more rather than less, as long as it was gathered honestly and ethically. Our role in the healthcare pie is obvious to us but not so within the general population. Our communities are full of potential patients just waiting to hear our message and participate in the wonders of chiropractic care. Therefore the DC that is able to capture these folks and bring them on board honestly and ethically wins the prize. Is there anyone reading this message that doesnıt agree? The problem lies on how to approach meeting these people and bring them along for the chiropractic ride. Way back when, as a student at Life College, I, like every student intern, had to hustle up patients for my student clinic. Some students used devious methods to attract a small cadre of people, while others relied upon bestowed patients provided by graduating interns. I on the other hand, seized every opportunity to share my chiropractic experience and tell the story of health and wellness through chiropractic care. One day, prior to leaving the Marietta police station to be fingerprinted, a requirement for waiters serving liquor in a restaurant, I asked the desk clerk if there was a police academy. Lo and behold there was a small class being held there and a Lt. Higgins was in charge and after meeting with him, I scheduled myself to speak to their recruits on stress management. During my short discussion of biomechanical stress, I emphasized chiropractic and the school clinic close by. After the class, I handed around a sheet of paper and asked everyone interested in a chiropractic evaluation to jot down his or her contact information. So many responded to this one talk as well as others, that I was giving new patients away. This was followed by more talks arranged after paying my telephone bill at their service center or speaking to the postmaster at the local post office. There are no limits to your success, just a limit to your vision and ability to see it through. I mentioned to a fellow student at the time that a new patient was like plucking fruit from a tree. It remains true today. We might argue that certain areas are resistant but if this is true, your planning an office in that location was foolish to begin with. As a business, planning your success starts prior to opening your doors, it begins with a careful demographic review of the office area and the potential to attract business. In our case, patients, where they live, work, pray and socialize. I suspect that no matter where you are located, some components of these are available. Start this New Year by evaluating the past year. Review the weak areas of patient recruitment and weakness within practice management. Review those accountable such as your staff and determine if they are literally well trained or manage on the fly. There is so much to consider that practice management coaches are often the only way to make a breakthrough. I recommend you spend time in reflection and if you have questions, please e-mail them to me or to the many mentors found on my webpage, weıll answer for free.
