Postpartum Wouldn¹t it be great if every pregnant and brand new mother were given an instruction booklet when they were first told the blessed news and another one right after the baby makes it¹s arrival. It would be grand to look up every scenario and abide by the recommendations and then coast the time away. But alas, every pregnancy is different and every newborn provides its own individual and familial challenges. So, instructions are found from word of mouth and old fashioned trial and error. But, this is not true for the new mother wishing to provide their child and themselves the best of health and wellness from the start. They do have choices to make the journey smoother and healthier. Consider the birth process alone, trauma. Consider the first few days after everyone leaves the new parents alone, mental trauma. I agree that trauma may be such a harsh word but considering the physiological and physical process, trauma fits the bill. We chiropractors must place ourselves and our skills within the forefront of community wellness by providing each new mother the gift of ease, helping to stabilize their physical trauma as well as their baby. Let¹s take a closer look. The vital supportive bed of soft tissue within the brachial region eases the flow of energy from the lower neck and upper back to the extremities. Holding the new born while nursing without proper support or in an awkward position tends to irritate these areas providing fodder for paresthesia or carpal tunnel. Do we have a professional and instructive place to educate and reduce this pressure? You Bet! How about the twists and turns demanded by the insistent tot. Repetitive new moves tax the upper and lower back which is further insulted by odd hours and lack of sleep. If you ever thought you were missing a break from work, it is dimmed by the 24/7 demands on a new mother. Be real here, every new mother must adapt and adjust to the physical demands that only love forces it possible to endure. But the crème la crème awaits the first transport, the car seat. Lifting it from place to place with every new twist and turn leaves little left to irritate and aggravate. Doctor, nothing prepares the typical new mother for the rigors of postpartum physical trauma than childbearing. A beautiful trauma is may be but an offense to structure and function it is. So what can we do? There are Lamaze classes and La Leche program and this is standard within every community. A great start but the physical trauma remains unabated until you get on the scene. Be creative and provide an educational workshop to your expectant and new mothers. Like every pregnancy and every birth the nuances of difference makes it difficult to have one idea to fit all, but the general gist of exercises, proper ways to lift, massage techniques shared with the spouse to eliminate chronic tension to supple muscles, and most important why and how chiropractic care will benefit them for the short and long term. Who better than you, a chiropractor, to offer these programs to OB patients within your community with memos going to every maternity ward in the area. So many new mothers need our assistance to avoid the chronic wear and tear that can either be avoided or managed. Postpartum can be a drag on the body but we are here to bring out the joys of the event.
