I am using a bit from one of his writings for today's message: "If you aren't in over your head, how do you know how tall you are?" Simply said, you have to get out in front of the fray to succeed. I overheard a conversation the other day between two doctors, both frustrated with the movement of their practice. I thought they were doing well, but the more they spoke the more I realized that a book cover doesn't exactly tell the entire story. Their numbers were down therefore income generated was down as well. The issue seemed to be a recurring theme, insurance payments were less and restrictions more and patients were less compliant. The bright conclusion to their conversation was an agreement to introduce cash plans, reduce insurance acceptance and educate their patients on wellness and the global picture of chiropractic. In today's economic climate, like T.S. Eliot said, if you aren't in over your head attempting new and different ways to generate an income you'll never reach the heights you desire. Too many unforeseen barriers often interrupt the best plans and crimp progress. Outside events that generated lots of new patients now find less coming in. Money spent on marketing projects seems now to be good money spent awry. Patient commitments solid in the past have floundered and savings set aside are being used. What gives? The theme of this message and a few from the immediate past may be more negative than usual but from the pulse of the e-mails I receive, it rings true. The answer lies in change and realizing that standing tall requires you to stick your head out as never before. It's crucial you gather more knowledge and share it to promote your practice. Your staff must be honed to excellence becoming an integral part of your practice growth. Patient satisfaction must be a priority with a service attitude beyond doubt. Fluid movement of patients through practice protocols must be adhered to in order to reduce tension from inmates running your asylum. Patient management reduces missed appointments and increases referrals. Our future may be similar to an orthodontist. Some patients have insurance most don't. Case fees run in the thousands requiring a strong business foundation with alternative cash plans and a stronger purpose to see the job through. Value must be set and set as strong as the braces they expect to use. They succeed because patients are educated to the reality of the problem and understand fully their responsibility, including fees. This may be our future, alternative payment programs and a strong understanding of patient responsibilities. Patient and staff education is more important today than ever. Success is not a given but the alternative sucks. Stick your neck out and expect your staff to do so as well. So, If you aren't in over your head, how do you know how tall you are?"
