Out of body experience If you had an out of body experience .. placing yourself where your patients usually find themselves within your office .. you may have a better idea why they either stopped care prematurely or never refer. A cursory look within your consultation .. exam .. report of findings .. reception .. adjusting rooms may alert you to specific areas where you may lose them. As doctors we have the advantage of knowing what and why we do what we do and probably the type and duration of care from day one. But do they? If possible and if time allows .. close your eyes and walk with your next new patient as they journey through your office. Let us assume they know little about chiropractic and less about Health and Wellness. To them their purpose of coming to you was to get rid of pain and be gone. This sounds reasonable and is the typical allopathic method of healthcare .. symptom gone equals patient gone. Fine .. if this is how you practice. But .. for those who appeal to preventive wellness concepts and the subluxation complex being a reality .. care is not dependent on pain but on reducing neurological aberrant behavior .. necessitating continued care beyond pain. Nonetheless .. however you practice.. were that patient you .. did you get the concept across to yourself .. were you clear that function and wellness was the doctors primary concern. If not .. don¼t expect yourself to stay as a patient beyond that first day of relief. Again .. follow that new patient into the report of findings and the first adjustment. Did you explain with visual and audible aides what was found and how it affects their human potential. Did you illustrate the difference between the conservative chiropractic approach to health care and all others. Did you demonstrate with a clear understanding of why your approach to their problem is of great value and that the difference will definitely make a difference. Were you able in the short time allotted for this report to review the lifecycle of their problem including possible physical .. chemical .. emotional and neurological stress factors. Was time taken to show the films and relate it to function .. add your criteria of accepting their case .. provide goals and homework to help them help themselves. Prior to the adjustment did you explain exactly what it does .. what they should expect .. what reaction they may have .. what they can do to help in maintaining their adjustments and most important .. why repetition and momentum is the key to success. Also .. have you been planting seeds for referrals and provided an avenue to ask and have questions answered? This all takes quality rather than quantity time.
