The Musician's Guide to Health and Wellness E-mail message this week .. Olympic Gold What can we as chiropractors learn from the Olympic message? Wednesday evening while watching the men's all around gymnastics competition, I witnessed a test of character, focus and strength. All Olympic athletes deserve the greatest praise but some shine brighter than others and dig deeper within themselves with the utmost focus and ability to rise for and get the gold. Often this occurs in the last millisecond with an extra spurt of energy or a push to the finish line. This was no truer than Wednesday evening's men's individual all around gymnastics competition with the gold going to Paul Hamm. This young man dreamt, as they all did, of winning gold at the Olympics. He suffered the usual injuries and overcame setbacks that plague athletes at this level. Prior to the gymnastic ring event his trainer was rubbing down his painful shoulder and during the event you could feel his pain. With it all he had a shot at winning and was even favored to take the gold. Also competing, at his last Olympics, was Yang Wei of China. Time and experience was on his side. He mentioned to the media that the gold would only satisfy and would complete his illustrious career as an athlete. He was also fantastic and a few points ahead of Hamm until the vault event with Paul Hamm landing on his rear and stopped from rolling further by a judge. Talk about Olympic gold dreams crashing immediately before your eyes and losing focus. Thoughts now were towards completing other individual events but now with some lost confidence. As we watched dumfounded, my wife and I felt for him and the commentators mentioned that probably the silver and bronze were not in the cards. From the number one and two spots he now descended to twelfth. As I continued watching Yang Wei and others ace their events it was clear that Wei's lead and gold was his to lose. When Hamm's next event came up I just hoped he would compete well and leave the competition with his head high. The commentator mentioned that he had nothing to lose and may just "go for the gold" and perform his best. He did and then Wei had trouble with the Horizontal Bars. This was Hamm's window of opportunity requiring utmost focus and stamina. From an almost impossibility the tides were turning and through his individual efforts a medal was possible. After watching others compete in their final event and ace their performances, time was now for Paul Hamm to mount the parallel bars. He had nothing and much to lose. It was a phenomenal performance wowing the spectators and obviously the judges who boosted his numbers toward and to gold. What can we as chiropractors learn from the Olympic message? Simply, we should never accept today as sufficient. We have trained hard as students and applied our art in clinic and in practice. There are so many avenues to transverse in our world that it's similar to the hurdles and pain of an athlete. It shows character and focus if you step up your patient education and accept nothing less that perfection with each adjustment. As you step up the parallel bars of life patients will share your confidence and they in turn will share it with others. When you feel like you slipped and needed others to hurl you back, you despair less as your consciousness is aimed at success and making each day more. You think these are idle words and a passÈ message .. think again. Amongst us are winners and losers. A review of your graduating class will attest that those most likely to succeed probably didn't and the students that struggled to achieve probably did. Why you ask and I say why not. If you plan your goals and work your plans and focus towards the gold .. you'll reach it every time. To me this is the Olympic message.
