New Life It has been awhile since I last held a newborn that belongs to me. My wife and I are blessed with three beautiful children and now a grandchild. Our genetic stream has been expanded with the birth of Aiden, and even though he lives far from Atlanta, Iım sure we will spoil him with love and kindness. I hope that my daughter brings Aiden to her chiropractor, Dr. Christian in Beachwood, Ohio. I am confident that Dr. C, will help this fine young sprout grow through the cycle of young life with health and wellness. When I first saw Aiden, he was part of our world less than a day. Our world, how different it is from the world I was greeted with many many years ago. Chiropractic was not as recognized as it is today and people generally were treated by a chiropractor for cricks and strains. As I aged and mellowed within our societal restraints, I along with almost everyone else utilized the medical model of healthcare for all our physical needs. This was status quo and who bickered when a medical physician spoke. In fact, they were the closest to the infallible truth and their word was generally the final word. But as I aged and years of spinal pressure gnawed at me further, I began to suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous misfortune and was not satisfied after seven years of searching for wellness truth via medicine. I did not suffer with a crick and sprain nor with any mechanical distortion that offered chronic pain, no, I suffered with years of abdominal distress and a restricted life. After numerous x-rays and countless medical office visits with a myriad of drugs, I was no better. But to shorten the story, it was at the hands of David Singer, DC that I received my first adjustment and my first introduction into an alternative stream of thought. Chiropractic adjustments worked where the miracles of medicine failed. How and why, and after 27 years of active practice I admit, I still canıt put my finger on the scientific neurophysiological/biomechanical wherewithal of the adjustment and the positive events that follow. I probably could converse intelligently about the course taken after reduced nerve pressure is possible, but honestly, I would rather dwell on results and attempt to increase awareness of this amongst others. After years of watching my children grow to adulthood with just a handful of physiological complaints and nary a severe bout of anything, I am more convinced about the benefits of chiropractic than found within the binding of a medical textbook. Do I deny the reality of modern science, no. Do I deny the great achievement of modern medicine, no. Do I deny that there are chiropractors doubting the subluxation and the health benefits of adjusting, sadly, no. I donıt deny any of it, but as I look into the small eyes of a new entry into my family fold, how can I deny him a life without adjustments or only when he is able to complain and be evidence based. Ridiculous. We are a product of our experience and my experience has witnessed many miracles of the adjustment. We are the product of our education and mine was forged from two chiropractic schools each with a similar slant of philosophy of life and health rather than idolizing the ramification of sickness and pain. I choose to provide adjustments as a proactive preventive approach to wellness not just to keep the dreaded symptom at bay. I choose to increase physical performance even before the body is expressing discourse. Call it maintenance, call it supportive care, who care, timely adjustments is the safe and healthy way to go. If there isnıt enough evidence basis for this, then the gathering of data is flawed or non-existent. I conclude by welcoming my grandson into the forum of man, hoping that with each passing year, the search for chiropractic truth will be met and we will find our services more in demand. One question weıve failed to see during the controversy over the Terri Schiavo "right to life" case is what can WE do to prevent this from happening in our own families. Medical technology can allow keep people alive even though they are not really functioning. Teri, who is in a vegetative state, is in the middle of a debate between a group of people who want to keep her alive and another group who want to let her die peacefully. Her husband says she wouldnıt want to be kept alive in the condition sheıs in and he says she expressed that to him. The problem is that her wishes were never written down. People should write exactly what they would like to happen in whatıs called an "advance directive." People should also appoint a messenger who will be the steward of that information and will deliver it to the appropriate parties if something happens. Clark does not want to be kept alive if machines must function for him. But you may feel very differently. Thatıs why itıs important to establish your wishes ahead of time. To find out more, check out the following sites: partnershipforcaring.org (provides specific advance directive forms for each state), agingwithdignity.org (offers details about its Five Wishes document), healthdirectives.org (charges $18 a year to scan directive documents and make wallet-sized cards specifying how medical providers can retrieve the documents from the website), and uslivingwillregistry.com (offers directive services for member hospitals
