* Instead, Dr. Kim Williams ousts three other trustees MARIETTA ã Dr. Kim Williams has refused Life University¼s Board of Trustees¼ request 07/06/02 Email this story to a friend By Phillip Giltman Marietta Daily Journal Staff Writer MARIETTA ã Dr. Kim Williams has refused Life University¼s Board of Trustees¼ request to resign, and instead, ousted three board members Friday, according to one of the dismissed trustees. Kim Williams ã daughter of Life founder Dr. Sid Williams ã sits as head of the university¼s Corporate Members, which has the power to elect and remove trustees from the board. According to 28-year trustee Dr. James Sigafoose, one of the three trustees removed, the Corporate Members also ousted board trustees Dr. Paul Penn and Lee Scroggins on Friday afternoon. Sigafoose said he received word of his dismissal via a fax from Kim Williams. „The Corporate Members of Life University recently met to access and review the Board of Trustees,¾ the fax reads. „As a result of that meeting, a qualified successor has been elected; thus your position on the Board of Trustees is concluded effective immediately.¾ Sigafoose said newly elected chairman of the Board of Trustees Dr. Charles Ribley called him after he got the fax. Sigafoose said he was told he had missed out on four years of board meetings, an accusation he denied. „I missed out on some (meetings) but not four years worth,¾ he said. Sigafoose said he was a bit confused with the timing of the board¼s decision to oust him. „It doesn¼t bother me one way or the other, but it just seems strange that they would let me go at this time,¾ he said. „I have done whatever I could for that school.¾ The move has led to speculation as to who is actually in charge at the embattled university. Last week, Sigafoose revealed that the board had urged all of Dr. Sid Williams¼ family ã including Dr. Kim Williams ã to leave the university because new administrators were set to take over. The university¼s founder Dr. Sid Williams appeared to heed the board¼s direction as his office was cleared out and memorabilia featuring his likeness was stripped from the school¼s lobby. However, no official announcement has been made. The university said Friday that a mandatory assembly for all students, staff and faculty will be held on Monday. Ribley is expected to offer details on the school¼s efforts to cope with the school¼s recent accreditation crisis. Ribley and Kim Williams were unavailable for comment Friday. The Council on Chiropractic Education stripped Life of its accreditation June 10 for not meeting several criteria mandated by CCE standards. The university has until July 10 to appeal CCE¼s decision. Paul Lapides, a former professor at Life and current director of the corporate governance center at Kennesaw State University which studies directors and trustees of public, private and non-profit organizations, was also confused of the board¼s decision. „Changing the trustees doesn¼t seem to make a lot of sense right now,¾ he said. „It makes sense to stay focused on what they need to do to serve these students. There is no purpose in terminating a trustee in the middle of a catastrophe.¾ Sigafoose said the Corporate Members also elected four people as trustees, the fourth member replacing former chairwoman Rebecca Ray, who resigned last month. The board appointed Ribley late last month to replace Ray. pgiltman@mdjonline.com
