Q: Dr. M I am going to an MD office next week to present chiropractic to a family physician, internist, 2 nurse practitioners and all of their staff. Any advice or information you could share with me would be greatly appreciated. A: Thanks for the e-mail. My position is simple .. never step on their turf and just tell the truth. If a medical facility has offered you the opportunity to visit their office and introduce yourself .. they probably wish to cooperate with referrals. Therefore . this is your opportunity to go through the logistics of when .. why and how. When would it be appropriate for them to refer to a chiropractor and vice versa. Why would they consider referring to you and how they can do it. Since MDžs have a global license to do just about everything and they also have the physical therapist to resort to you must make a case for chiropractic. The first would be that we are conservative .. possibly discuss the technique you use in a general fashion .. a safe and smart choice for your patients. Next they should consider sending patients with specific problems. Discussing the subluxation is well and good but may be a threat to them. Subluxation care is global as well and not defined to musculoskeletal. Although this is fine amongst each other .. it poses a problem for the MD. They can relate to their patients with specific joint problems .. chronic pain syndromes .. headaches and radicular pain. As much as we like to take them back to the subluxation .. it only places them on the defense. My motto is simple .. get the patient in your door somehow and them educate as you wish. Therefore when: They may have an auto/work/sports injury case with no broken bones but soft tissue .. they may have a chronic headache patient or/with radicular pain in the extremities that have had limited success with medication. They may have their chronic or acute lower back or should neck strain that does poorly with medication. Therefore why: We are conservative .. people seem to appreciate the ability to use all methods of healing .. tolerated by those who donžt tolerate medication .. insurance may cover service .. you will mutually refer to them if they need medical attention or testing .. you will send a mini report of your findings. Also determine in your own mind how you can help their patients and just express it without taking their self respect as a medical professional. Therefore how: Bring office cards .. a map from them to you .. hours that you are open .. all it takes is their patient or their medical office to call appointments are taken the same day .. Itžs that easy. Just remember that statistics is a plus but not necessary .. reams of data is a plus but not that necessary. You being there and available for their patient is the biggest plus Good Luck
