From: Dr. Margolies .. 10-24-02 www.chirosmart.net LUCC update: The school lost its appeal from the CCE. As of October 20, 2002 .. LUCC has no accreditation and immediately applied for reaccredidation. It would be assumed that it will be on a fast track for reinstatement as the infrastructure is there and changes are being implemented as I write this. The issue now .. can LUCC remain open during the process? LUCC depends on student tuition and 38% plus have already left for other schools. Recent lawsuits from students against the school and Dr. Sid are in the process of filing and will drain further funds. The school must sell assets to remain viable during the process. Lasting Purpose If you ever attended a Dynamic Essentials program or was a student at LUCC you know that the LP or lasting purpose is the logo and essentially the theme of LUCC. It is the brainchild of Dr. Sid Williams and sustained by those that have followed his lead for over 30 years. Since this is my forum to vent or share ideas with you .. I intend to do both. I am both angry and sad. I am angry that a wonderful school .. even with all its visible warts .. has been trashed and slashed by an accrediting institution that had a political agenda in one hand and a clear message within the other. The political agenda was to humble .. to many but not all .. an outspoken chiropractic leader. Who visualized and created a huge school with all the benefits of a small town university. The political agenda was also to contain a philosophical movement that related the purpose of care as a means towards an end .. Health and Wellness .. not just for what is also perceived as reducing aches and pains. LUCC adhered to the subluxation theory while some other schools and their graduates vehemently think it is outdated and unscientific and labels those that adhere to this theory as nothing more than fishmongers. I imagine the battle lines were drawn the day the CCE was created .. when every ACA affiliated school was instantly accredited and all others were given their criteria and a date to comply. I am not here to debate the issue just to note the long standing debate within our profession after 25 years as a participant and observer. I may be wrong but this is how I see it. The CCE also carried their message to fruition. LUCC must adapt and comply or perish. I am not privy to the meetings or messages that LUCC and the CCE exchanged for years .. all I see is the result. The message CCE carried was clear and they carried the ball since they created and maintained the rules. The ICA should have had some input .. if they did .. it was too little and too late.. I blame them as well as they were a mirror image and probably a rubber stamp as well these past years. The message the CCE carried was strong and clear .. we will give you another year of probation and that¼s it. The literal implosion of LUCC is the result. I am angry at LUCC .. the administration ..the Board of Trustees .. the Division and Department heads and Dr. Sid Williams. I am angry they let many of us down. They were keepers of the key not the CCE. They were guardians of the sacred trust to sustain chiropractic by adapting to the changing climate. We alumni trusted they would keep our school progressing via research and continued excellent student education. The trustees were there to critique not rubber stamp. They were there to review the books not help cook them with fuzzy math. They should have suspected problems when the student body swelled with possibly less worthy candidates to allow the tuition hungry school feed its growing debt hungry appetite. Funny .. where did all the money come from for the once huge and successful sports program .. buildings that are now for sale .. outreach programs to sustain an image but little to sustain the profession? Were they at the expense of the chiropractic program? Where were division and department heads when statistics were clear that students taking national board exams were failing in higher numbers than other schools .. when defaulted student loans proved that students were possibly unprepared to succeed once they left the school .. when board review classes were more important for students that it took precedence over actual school class time. I equally blame the CCE and LUCC. The CCE at least played with a full deck .. their hand was open for years. LUCC on the other hand played Russian Roulette and lost at the expense of their students .. their families .. their futures. Both have proverbial blood on their hands and must account for their actions. What is left is hurt .. financial scars .. stifled futures. "We will continue doing everything possible to meet the CCE requirements, and we will immediately reapply for accreditation," Dr.Schmidt (interim president) said. Okay .. who was asleep at the switch these last two years! What really ticks me off is having to continually answer a bad question. I had a number of LUCC students e-mail me with their frustrations and concerns. Many have asked me if they should transfer. There is no perfect answer for a question that should never have been asked. If you are reading this far from Atlanta you cannot appreciate the hurt and personal and psychological turmoil many LUCC students now face. The damage has been done and from these ashes the school will rise again. There is no justice for any of it. Remember that chiropractic is bigger than one man .. one school .. one accrediting agency. This is the Lasting Purpose that motivates me .. not dogma or radicalism on either side.
