It's been over ten years since my first bout with pneumonia in 2003 when I was hospitalized for five days and unable to work for a month. Fortunately, I realized similar signs and went to my primary care physician who diagnosed pneumonia. I almost died last time and was not taking any chances now. Lessons Learned: There are always lessoned learned from any crisis, unfortunately we usually apply them after the fact. When I retire, I'd like to write. So while I was home this past weekend, in between catching up on Tivoed television shows, I began thinking about my first book incorporating life lessons. I've been through a few crisis's in my life and at the time looked deep within to talk to my maker, confessing my misdeeds and moments of poor judgment and how I promised the man above that if I can get out of this crisis, I will do better? How many of you have done so yourself? A lot do, and how many times have we broken that promise. Every New Years Resolution is a promise to improve but look how quickly we break them. Our health is our most precious asset. No treasure can make up for poor health and the gift of health is a gift we should never take lightly. But we often do. Eating healthy is not as expensive as maintaining sickness. Like so many others, I have gone through the yo-yo existence of dieting, exercising and living the clean life. Health and Wellness is not something given to us without the obligation to maintain it. Twinkies versus Apples, is there a choice for sustenance? Real food is not industrialized. Think about this, we literally are dying too long and living too short. Read that sentence again and see how that makes great sense. It's not bad genes that create many of our illnesses it's poor life choices. Disease and illness including pain is adaptive physiology, the body doing its job. Rather than cooperating with natural body physiology, we often usurp the ability of the body to naturally heal. Medication saves lives, as it will mine, but the choices I made and the sustenance I gave it was insufficient for a strong immunity creating my health crisis. So what was the lesson learned? Begin to treat my body as a temple not as an outhouse. I need to be more conscious of what I eat because what most bodies lack is increased health and the source of this is a food supply. The purpose of supplementation is to provide what the body lacks. Next Step: I will be muscle tested and begin a regime of specific whole food supplements. I was on a maintenance protocol but I need further guidance to jumpstart my health. Be assured, I will follow the recommended supplements and dosages. I will return to a specific schedule of chiropractic adjustments just as if I were a new patient. Neurological stress produces physiological stress resulting in decreased function and wellness. Adjustments are primary to reduce neurological stress. I will be more serious about my exercise regime. I belong to two gyms but find little time to use either. This is foolish and again a poor choice. I will stress less, that one is the easy one, right. As chiropractors we have a huge responsibility to be a doctor, a teacher. Patient education and review of their living habits and how they could adjust their life to include the lessons we all need to learn. Adjustments, supplements, rehabilitation and subtle but firm recommendations for weight loss and proper eating habits will save many lives. Please get your own house in order and extend it to your community. I love life and wish live a long one. I hope we'll be on the journey together Have a Great Day Dr. M PS: If you think my weekly e-mails have value, please tell your chiropractic colleagues and schoolmates to subscribe.
