All the lofty goals we chiropractors philosophically know to be true are mute if you cannot sustain your business. Repaying student loans, purchasing a home and business along with vehicles, travel, private schools for the kids and saving for retirement takes skill and business savvy. No one said it'd be easy. We don't have the luxury of working for a consortium of hospitals providing security with a decent paycheck and benefits, nor do we have the luxury of steady clientele, patients reproducing with vigor through their family and friends. We must work diligently and steadfast to create and sustain the business we enjoy. That being said, what if you are a woman and the joys of pregnancy place work on hold, at least for awhile until the next one comes along, or you are a husband with a wife that must move family and home to keep that lucrative paycheck. Possibly you were an associate or worked as an independent contractor then decided to leave the coop, now starting again. Juggling life with business is a trip to be sure. So, if you are amongst the many reading these e-mails with similar fates, how have you coped? Did you give in to the notion that there was little future with starts and stops along the way or have you been successful juggling from one block to the other? Let me and others know. Reply back to me: joel3639@aol.com with your story and how you coped and juggled lifting yourself up using business savvy to get you from one hurdle to the other. Realize that there are many other docs who also had to take a few side roads prior to landing on their road to success. Share your story with me so I can share it with others in similar situations and be assured there are many. I believe in solutions rather that getting deeper into problems. What should one do if their life has taken a turn and their business suffered? First is to consolidate the wins that got you so far. Time is ripe to collect your successful steps and ideas and begin asking for assistance from those that will share. If funds are limited to assist with marketing and promotion use every resource in a cost effective manner. Drive around your office community looking for the four components of our business demographics, clerical. retail, labor and residential. Each component have areas to explore for workshops, screenings, health fairs or just getting your name around. Planting seeds for a bountiful harvest starts by fertilizing your soil. Next, work within your patient base to get a handle on their concerns and tailor classes and handouts including specific e-mails to their work and home creating awareness and urgency to use your services. Patient and community focus groups work even if at first it seems difficult to launch. In other words begin methodically, in baby step fashion, to rebuild a solid base of patients. Set your goals high but keep your action steps realistic with one rung up the ladder of success close enough to reach the other. Okay, if you have a story to share, please e-mail me so I can pass it on to those juggling their lives around our business Have a Great Day Dr. M PS: If you are an Atlanta DC and wish to participate in timely sharing meetings, let me know. I would like to invite you to my Tucker office for workshops concerning various aspects of practice management, such as creating a successful PI practice, holiday promotions, using the internet to market, public relations, nutrition etc. There will be a minimum fee of $25 for my local orchestra as a fund raising opportunity.
