From: Dr. Margolies .. 4-3-01 www.chirosmart.net I have always attempted to keep my newsletters and webpage apolitical .. good for both the ACA .. ICA .. WCA and even the NFL and all those in between. There is an important vote next month for the ICA President and Vice President. I am sending this special e-mail as a courtesy of this worldwide election and will do the same for the ACA for their election if they also request that it. The following two messages are from the two candidates for the position of the ICA President. Drs. D.D. Humber and Tom Klapp. In alphabetical order .. here are their messages. From: Dr. Humber: (dhumber@life.edu) D. D. HUMBER DC, FICA 2710 Twin Leaf Trail Marietta, GA 30062 April 2, 2001 Dear ICA Colleague: I sincerely appreciate your taking the time to read the information contained in this letter as I inform you of my candidacy for the office of President of the International Chiropractors Association. These are times of profound decision for our organization and I wan t you to know how dedicated and determined I am to move the ICA back into the realm of our founding values and principles. At the same time, I fully intend to push hard, with careful planning and full consultation among ICA¼s leadership circle, for meaningful membership development, legislative progress, global development and support of the practice needs of our individual member. I also want you to know how strongly I believe in teamwork and cooperation within ICA¼s leadership circle. I am excited to announce that I will be running as a team with ICA¼s current Vice President, Dr. Maxine McMullen. I can¼t think of a single individual who has worked harder and contributed more to the strength of the ICA than Maxine. Her years of selfless service, as a leader in ICA¼s Pediatrics Council, her contributions to ICA¼s publications and her powerful advocacy of ICA¼s values in the classroom and on the lecture stage qualify her for any leadership position within the ICA and have earned her the respect and confidence of ICA members worldwide. I am proud to stand with Dr. McMullen in this upcoming election and am confident that she will bring great strength and dignity to our ticket. ACCOUNTABILITY will be the watchword during the Humber/McMullen Administration. Each Board Member, Committee Chair and Assembly Representative, as well as the home office staff, will be challenged to produce. ABOUT MY OPPONENT: As Chairman of ICA¼s Membership Committee (for the past 20 months) for example, he has presided over one of the most precipitous membership slides in the history of our organization, with an erosion of nearly 2,000 members in all categories. Where was the enthusiasm and vision then, where were the letters, where was the plan, where were the phone calls, were was the effort? Where are the new members? The answer is clear; nothing was done. MORE TIME FOR ICA: I pledge my full and active service on behalf of the ICA. I have requested a leave of absence from Life in order to devote the majority of my time and energy to leading ICA. But I cannot alone make ICA the largest and BEST National Association. It will take all of us together. I invite you to be my partner in an exciting period of celebration of ICA¼s values and the worldwide promotion of our organization through the most positive, up-to-date, well-planned and aggressive building effort we have ever experienced in chiropractic. From Dr. Klapp: (tomklapp@worldnet.att.net) Should status quo continue to be good enough for the ICA? You decide By Dr. Tom Klapp Your choice for ICA President has never been clearer. The ICA membership has, for the first time in years a clear choice between change, modernization, and even reformãand the status quo. As president of the ICA, I will challenge the „status quo¾ as it has never been challenged before. Below, I have listed some examples of the issues I plan to address. The ICA has run a financial deficit for at least the last three years- -in spite of a nearly $3 million annual income. Our members deserve better management of their resources. Is the status quo of constant deficit spending acceptable? You decide. The chiropractic principle is under assault from every direction. Yet, the ICA communicates only with its members. No wonder so many ICA members are frustrated... we don't adequately tell our story, membership suffers, student conversion to full membership suffers, our influence on the profession suffers. Is the status quo of members-only communication acceptable? You decide. The ICA has not had a credible legislative effort OR professional legislative consultant or lobbyist for years now. Thus, we have not had the representation the membership deserves. Our members are paying for and deserve more. Is the status quo of under- representation in Washington (and internationally) acceptable? You decide. According to www.opensecrets.org, the ACA disbursed $319,143 last election cycle to federal election candidates. The ICA disbursed $24,800 in the same cycle. Yet, while we have 50% of the members and budget the ACA has, our PAC is just 7% of what their PAC disburses. It's no wonder they get legislation passed and we don't. It's no wonder they get "CMT" (Chiropractic Manipulative Therapy) codes implemented--and we wonder why. Is the status quo of being outspent by the ACA 7 to 1 acceptable? You decide. The ICA home office management has been the target of much criticism over the last decade (at least). When one area of an association's operations is so universally disparaged, doesn't it make sense for someone, eventually, to do something to fix the problem? Is the status quo of a subluxated home office acceptable? You decide. The ICA Board has a constitutional obligation to do strategic planning. According the ICA's Constitution, we are required to hold a two-day strategic planning meeting twice per year! We have neglected this portion of our own constitution. Is the status quo of ignoring our constitutional obligations acceptable? You decide. ICA seminars and even the ICA Council events are attended by over 90% NON-MEMBERS. Yet, for years now, we have had no strategy, no membership director responsible for recruiting these customers of the ICA's product. Is the status quo of having inadequate resources dedicated to member recruitment acceptable? You decide. Make no mistake, my opponent is the very epitome of „status quo.¾ If you are unhappy with the status quo, your choice is very clearãvote for me for ICA President. And while you are checking your ballot, please vote for my running mate, Dr. Gene Cretsinger for ICA Vice President.
