From the Well During school and practice years the average DC faces moments of doubt and at times even burn out. As insurance issues and patient and staff management gets overwhelming and frustration sets in there is little to do but go with the flow. Going with the flow is okay for awhile but soon enough other directions must be decided on as there are only three options available .. either stay the same .. flounder under the wave of negativity or make substantial changes to get above the fray. Which one will you choose? These e-mails go to a vast cross section of our profession. Some of you are doing fantastic and have extra cash to spare. Others try terribly hard but still get nowhere fast. Still others wait for the phone to ring and are quietly disappointed that they chose this profession since new patients are scarce and those that cross their threshold come and gone at will. Trust me .. from the most successful to the least .. everyone needs to dip deeply into the well of knowledge and trust to maintain professional and emotional sanity and practice stability. The well may be technical or esoteric seminars or as simple as a phone call to a colleague. The well may be staff that support your goals. The well may be your alumni group or a faculty member of your graduating school. The well may be your patients that have friends and family needing your talent as well. The well may be your community offering unlimited potential new patients desiring to increase their level of wellness but have no idea where to go. This is a special time for us as we are entering the holiday season. Between Thanksgiving and the New Year we can become a beacon within our community. Whether you have unlimited funds or you have to dip into savings this time of year takes little money to create interest for your office. Rather than financial resources you have to utilize talent resources and reach into your well of creativity. Observe your neighborhood and determine where you can place posters and handouts. Choose Mom and Pop vendors that can provide discounted or free services for door prizes. Team with a local or national charity to gather food .. money .. toys. Create the posters and handouts alerting everyone that you are a collection point for Toys for Tots or a local Food Bank. Offer a complimentary consultation or evaluation for everyone donating as well as a chance to win the prizes gathered from local vendors. Gather names and address plus e-mail address of these folks as they fill out a simple survey you create that questions their Health and Wellness Quotient and asks if they would attend your topical workshops and entertain increased health and wellness. A beacon is a light shining from your office bringing pilgrims seeking an alternative to pills and potions and increasing their physical performance. Spend the next few days brooding less but creating enthusiasm and energy more to reach both short and long term goals. The well is before you .. look in the mirror between the two eyes starring at you .. this is the well of knowledge and trust .. dip deeply there and if you need help .. don't be embarrassed to ask. If there is no one to ask well just ask me or many of the mentors that were kind enough to help you for free. They are found on my webpage. A short plug for my books. If ideas elude you then check my books .. they too are found on my webpage. Reply to: ClearwaterDC@aol.com MEMORANDUM TO: ACA House of Delegates State Chiropractic Association Leaders Chiropractic College Presidents COCSA Representatives FROM: ACA Communications Department RE: Chiropractic and Stroke TV News Story Set for Tonight in New York City; Boston Story in the Works DATE: November 6, 2003 ACA has learned that WNBC-TV in New York City will air a news segment tonight on chiropractic and the risk of stroke, and that it could be syndicated nationwide tomorrow morning. In addition, WCVB-TV in Boston, is working on a similar story as well. Reporter David Marks, MD, of WNBC-TV, an NBC affiliate, has alerted ACA that he plans on airing his story tonight at 5 p.m. in New York City. And Heather Unruh of WCVB-TV in Boston, an ABC affiliate, has also contacted ACA for information on this topic. ACA President Donald J. Krippendorf, DC, has been in close communication with WNBC reporter Marks and urged him to interview Dr. Scott Haldeman and Dr. Rand Swenson, well-known authorities on the topic of chiropractic and stroke. However, Marks declined saying he had already completed the interviews for his segment. ACA staff also provided Marks with well-documented information on the extremely small risks of chiropractic cervical manipulation and ACA response to a May 13 study in the journal Neurology. Marks has conceded that the risks of chiropractic are very minute, but has said that the focus of his story will probably be on the issue of informed consent. ACA staff has also provided Unruh of WCVB-TV in Boston with statistics on chiropractic and the small risk of stroke, and has arranged an interview with FCER Director of Research, Anthony Rosner, PhD, on the topic. Because both of these stations are in large markets and their stories could likely be syndicated on NBC and ABC affiliates across the country, the ACA is distributing talking points "on the issue of chiropractic and stroke and informed consent to doctors of chiropractic across the country. While ACA is unsure what the outcome of these stories will be, we are urging doctors to use the talking points at the links below to help respond to questions from concerned patients or the media on this topic. Talking points on the issue of chiropractic cervical manipulation, informed consent and the low risk of treatment. www.acatoday.com/pdf/informed_consent_bullets.pdf A document by William J. Lauretti, DC, titled What are the Risks of Chiropractic Neck Adjustments that will provide even more background on this issue. www.acatoday.com/pdf/chiro-risks.pdf ACA response to the study that was published in the May 13, 2003 issue of the journal Neurology. www.acatoday.com/media/releases/051203.shtml Anyone with questions or who needs additional information should contact ACA at 800- 986-4636.
