Go with the flow Iıve been busy with a lot of projects and personal matters that Iıve decided to go with the flow and slow or quicken the pace as I see fit. I must admit Iım hooked to the visual arts. I love movies, plays and this season much too much television .. thank g-d for Tivo. So, with little room to add more, Iıve decided to place my cerebral being on slow and not get too upset with the controversial new chiropractic school getting off to a rocky and probably off the cliff start. Talk about hanging old laundry for public display. I remember when I was in chiropractic school, about 30 years ago, chiropractic did not have full insurance privileges, the medical community were overt and in our eyes about us being charlatans and quacks and many news articles and famous bylines bought into it. At that time I left it to the politicos within the ICA and ACA to defend and fight for our rights and their respect. The Wilkıs trial and other "deep throated" airings of the medical conspiracy to suppress our industry led to an increase in our public awareness and a slow but steady mushrooming of acceptance. It was a great day when public negative airings stopped and we just went about our way trying to build practices and community appreciation. So, I was disgusted to recently read again the old laundry list that some medics, faculty members and politicians have hung out to dry in full public display concerning their trepidation of having to legitimize chiropractic with a chiropractic school as part of a public university and one with a medical school on it to boot. I decided to read as much as I needed to keep somewhat informed and not post it often on my webpage under Chiropractic News. You can read some early concerns on my webpage, but the latest as I write this, at noon January 27, 2005, is copied at the bottom of the postings below. But, here we go again. What do we need to do to gain some respect or is it better to be pleased with what we have and keep ourselves out of the fray. Why not have a chiropractic college as part of a university? Some doctors are concerned that the philosophy will be compromised and others feel that the school will be hamstrung by constraints. Nonetheless, the old guard has shown their teeth and the battle lines will be drawn from the same game plans of the 70ıs, except this time our side has some creative ammunition and the offense, if you call the opposition, will be shortly on the defense if our science and results are questioned. So, sit back and enjoy to ride but if you are like me .. just go with the flow Have a Great Day Dr. M Postings: Chiropractic office space available in Suffolk, Long Island, NY: Only $275 per month. (Follow the story via: http://www.tallahassee.com/mld/tallahassee) Board of Governors to take up FSU chiropractic school Associated Press GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The flap over a proposed chiropractic school at Florida State University is moving to archrival University of Florida, where the Board of Governors will take up the issue Thursday, January 27, 2005. The board, which oversees the state's 11 public universities, can either vote in favor of creating the nation's first chiropractic school at a public university, reject it or follow the Florida State University Board of Trustee's lead by talking about it and ultimately doing nothing. The project has been ridiculed by FSU's faculty, who say chiropractic medicine is a pseudoscience. The chiropractic community has been pushing for the school for at least a decade and the issue has been watched nationally. "I have been lobbied on both sides very heavily," said Carolyn Roberts, the board of governors chairman. "I am trying to keep an open mind until I hear all the input. That's only fair to the university." Roberts expects a vote after hearing arguments from both sides. A no vote will kill the project and a yes vote would send it back to the university. Two weeks ago, FSU's board of trustees put off their own vote on the school, choosing to wait for the board of governors. The project began last year when state lawmakers put $9 million in the state budget for a school. It was a pet project for then Senate President Jim King of Jacksonville, who is a Florida State alum. He has suggested some retaliation through the budget process if professors at his alma mater don't get in line behind the project. While not an outspoken supporter, Gov. Jeb Bush signed off on the chiropractic school. "There's the belief that it's going to happen someplace, it's just a question of where first," said Jack Hebert, a lobbyist for the Florida Chiropractic Association. "We'd like to be the first, but if we're not, there will be someone right behind us." To boost their case, the association hired Mason-Dixon Polling & Research to ask Floridians if they would support a chiropractic school at FSU. Of the 650 questioned, 79 percent said they agreed they school would be a benefit. The poll had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points. Chiropractic, which focuses on manipulating the spine to lessen back pain and improve overall health, has won wider acceptance over the years, as evidenced by its coverage in most health insurance plans. But in the 110 years since the chiropractic profession was created, the established medical community has largely boycotted it - challenging its scientific validity in courts and legislative bodies. In 1990, the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals found the American Medical Association guilty of conspiracy to destroy the profession.
