Not bad to receive a very decent salary each week for a summer intern job. But, as far as Iım concerned, he should be paying them. Right off the bat, there was a meeting with the 30 summer interns, each receiving a laptop and the usual speeches of praise and responsibility, but what was most interesting, was the emphasis on weekly goals and project mission statements. During our family evening discussion he explained what had happened during his first day at work and complained of the foolishness of weekly e-mailing his goals to his supervisor and how much importance they made of it. Doctor, do you write weekly, monthly, yearly or have you ever written and reviewed your professional goals, let along thought out a clear and distinct and focused mission statement? I dear say, most reading this have not. What is your opinion, is it foolish to spend time reviewing and tweaking action steps to reach a desired goal? Is it foolish to have established parameters for patient and practice management? Is your staff accountable to a number or to a vision? The successful amongst us can reach goals one rung at a time no matter the location of their practice, their income limitations or other variables. They succeed because they have vision and this is shared and worked with their staff. I discussed this with my son later that evening and recommended he reconsider his position. First, if a company places so much emphasis on this task, they must have a reason and second, a weekly review leaves little chance for failure. Their chain of command places the accountability of the project in the hands of many and by design the pegs of the board are in place with the help of all. It stands to reason that the success of this company was built on a solid foundation of accountability and clear goals. As a chiropractor and businessperson, you must consider the same for your practice. What are your goals and if asked, could you write a focused mission statement for your office? This is crucial. Spend time visualizing your practice goals from patient and staff management, patient procurement, technical prowess, educational programs and financial achievement as well as your ability to reach your community with your skill and knowledge. After clear thought, place it on paper and review it so it can be honed down even more. Sharpen it with both desire and reality, as unreachable goals lead to frustration and little success. Next share this with your staff and create action steps to reach each rung and do not be stingy, offer staff bonuses if you reach these goals. As with my son, have your staff create their own goals within the framework of yours and weekly tweak and manage them until they are reached. If you have some mission statements or goals setting ideas, please visit my website and place them on my message board so we can all share them. Have a Great Day .. how is that for a goal PS .. whether you practice from Amsterdam to Zurich or Amherst to Zeppilin, Georgia the same is true. The budgets and communities may differ but the issues affecting every spine remains the same. One patient or one spine at a time will lead to many more. Set in motion the desire and the plan, share your plans and vision with those in support, praise and help each patient and see how effective goals and goal setting will be.
