Steps towards Spring In just a matter of weeks it will officially be Spring. This is naturešs period of rejuvenation. It may still be cold where you are and the ground cover may still be snow but before long the weather will have changed and renewal will be in the air. As a business, we have this perfect opportunity to instill renewal within our office and get ready for the next generation of new patients. Spring means cleaning and planting. Planting means preparing and determining where you wish to impregnate the soil, cultivate and nurture for bumper crops. Our soil is the community and our crops are patients. So doc, are you prepared? Is your closet full of unfulfilled ideas and missed opportunities? Were promotional programs left to wither and shoved under a carpet or two? Is staff complacency the norm rather than the exception? Is patient adherence to treatment schedules unmet? Can you predict where your next new patient will be coming from or is it up to providence? These are questions that beg for answers. Now is the time to consolidate thought and retool for Spring planting. A landscape artist plots and plans a design and then checks the feasibility of success. Testing soil is similar for us using community focus groups, surveying our patients and generally getting a feel of where best to plant the idea and invest the time and money to make it grow. For us, every community has buttons to push and programs to implement. They also review past wins and failures and set aside those scrubs that withered quickly and spend more on nurturing the ones that flourished. We must do the same, spend time to review past wins and determine which promotional programs were winners and which was best left in the closet. One action step is to discuss this with your staff and review the numbers from your office last Spring and Summer. Were there specific programs that brought in new patients while others drained you? Were there programs that you wished you implemented but didnšt? After this review determine what and why they did what they did and what you shoulda and coulda done to make it better. Plot these ideas as a first step toward Spring planting. Financial resources and procedures should be reviewed and decided upon to assure success. Next action step would be plotting a course towards winnable ideas and not recreate problems of the past. Find mentors to discuss these ideas or purchase books and tapes to provide the knowledge and tools to make it happen. Spend the time and money to attend seminars or Spring state association conventions. A great first step is calling the Fernandez group to attend their April Atlanta seminar which should be right up your alley. If you havenšt the time to attend seminars a great alternative is distance learning. Check www.mbachiropractic.com for downloadable classes that can be reviewed by the entire staff. Once these ideas are on the table decide who is responsible to make it happen. This all takes time and thought .. the time to prepare is now. A flowering and flourishing Summer depends on the what steps you implement this Spring Have a Great Day Dr. M PS .. a word about my books.
