DC student needs help financing a spinal mission trip E-mail message this week .. From the Beginning Last week, I spent an hour or so with some bright lights of chiropractic enthusiasm during a mixer of potential PEAK students and field docs at LUCC. For those unfamiliar with PEAK, it is a mentoring program for graduating students at Life matching them with qualified field doctors willing and able to provide real life practice experiences. This is a win-win for students and doctors as mentoring hones the doctor's skills and you cannot duplicate the experience the students receive within a school clinic. For me, it is always a challenge to provide mentoring that the student deserves and have them take what they can handle. The challenge is to realize that I was once there, fresh faced and wide eyed to new ideas but often close minded to accept them. I've had a few that way, but when the student arrives the teacher will appear and often this was the satisfying case. I write this because when they are ready to graduate, it is a new beginning for them and I take it personal. Was I able to reach them with guidance and skills they would need to capture minds and hearts of their communities? Would they be able to fend for themselves in the minefield of insurance or lack of? Did they have the verbal skills to place a value on chiropractic, stamp responsibility within the patient and coordinate it with staff? Were they prepared to educate and facilitate health and wellness through proactive programs or would they be part of the herd, doing little to spread the message? What did you know when you took that diploma in hand and how long did it take to feel free and successful or are you not there yet? I ask everyone to take a breath and step back and see where you came from and where you are going. Planning is crucial to create success as nothing is gained by chance. Whether a student about to graduate or a doctor years in practice, goal setting and purposeful planning makes the game sweeter and the rewards that much more. Think like a hungry graduate with the eye of the tiger with hope and anxiety feeding off the other. Think as the consultant taking over your practice, your staff, your budget and turning things around by making it happen. Think about what could be done to improve efficiency, be more cost effective and able to profit and accumulate from your labors. Doctors, we all come from humble beginnings but we deserve a fantastic future Have a Great Day Dr. M Want to mentor students in your office, even in Russia or Peru? If you qualify and are willing to follow the teaching curriculum, contact Dr. John Markham, LUCC PEAK program founder and coordinator at: john.markham@life.edu or call 770-426-2980 for all the details. This is similar to med students doing rounds at various hospitals to review specialties during their last year of college. Postings: Dr. Joel E.
