Friend or Foe During one of my recent patient workshops, I discussed the responsibility of the doctor and patient. Besides our humble attempt to heal, we are teachers, administrators and disciplinarians when needed. Patients must cooperate and participate in their wellness. Our approach is easy; we adjust and let nature take its course. Their job is a bit more complex as they have to follow our lead and attempt to reduce their layers of stress whether physical or emotional and most assuredly neurological. But our efforts are met with little success if they do not cooperate with either their scheduled visits or specific homework. They may have missed appointments or dropped out. You could be their friend and completely understand and take no action no you could be a foe and get them on the phone and read them the riot act. Actually, was their problem your problem from the start. Were you intending to be their friend and not emphasis the importance of their care by placing a value on their health and wellness. Were they left with unanswered questions stemming from your decision to not confront them with reality by taking the friendly stance hoping they got the picture and will return on schedule. Or, were you a foe to their psyche, the wee voice that brings them the reality of structural irritation due to years of spinal neglect and poor lifestyle and work habits and choices. If you took x-rays, did you review as a friendly gesture or did you signal your concern both for what you see and the potential for more structural stress later. If they chronically miss their appointments are you too friendly and understand their dilemma or did it meet with strong discipline or a short lecture on the value of momentum and repetitive adjustments. In other words, you create the havoc of patient management from the get go by being either a friend or foe. This may be an exaggeration of the typical patient and practice circumstances but most of you know what my meaning is. The doctor should be the teacher and healer but more often than not to achieve both patient and your goals, a disciplinarian Have a Great Day Dr. M Postings: Dr. Joel E.
