Fresh Blood We welcome to our office Stephanie, a new Palmer graduate waiting to sit the boards and willing to learn a thing or two while prodding our office with fresh enthusiasm or fresh blood. While people come to us in pain or with health and wellness concerns, our purpose is to turn their frown to a smile and rejuvenate their innate to express more. What could be better. But considering the staid nuances of business, it's easy to become complacent finding you and your staff in the morass of sameness. If this defines you .. you need a transfusion of fresh blood. I find that training a new doctor or staff member offers an opportunity to review holes in practice routine. In fact, it easily highlights if procedures have become too routine and stale. Practice management 101 dictates that new patient protocol be routine while new patient acquisition be anything but. Practice management 101 dictates that procedures of patient processing be routine, while patient education and communication are anything but. Training or objective reviewing of practice procedures and patient communication and education affords you a great opportunity to make the necessary changes or affirm that you are right on mark. So, I recommend you perform an audit of your practice. Call a staff meeting and determine which areas of practice management are weak. Determine when patients drop out, discuss why and review procedures and scripts to recapture them and to fend off continued loss. If you determine that patients leave your office with little understanding of chiropractic and the value of care, they will probably leave with a depressed value for continued care and become a patient management nightmare. Possibly your patient educational procedures are too strong at first and you overwhelm them or scheduling and fee discussions are presented prior to their giving you the "green light." There are usually clear and obvious reasons for poor patient management but through your eyes and those who have been with you awhile, all may seem okay. An objective review of procedures or training others often outlines them easily. Also, reviewing procedures often outlines where the parameters of your office comfort zones are. Are you offering spinal care classes or new and active patient workshops or are you too timid to speak in front of others? Are you able to confront patient objections and let them know what they need not what you feel comfortable telling them? Are your personal constraints on money keeping you from outlining care plans that are reasonable, ethical and necessary? Are staff members unconsciously suppressing your office growth by not mentioning referrals, following up with missed appointments, forgetting to reactive drop outs or simply letting usual and customary procedures slide by? Do you have active plans and goals for the next three months or do you proceed on a rudderless ship? Doctor, it's time for new blood and a transfusion of new ideas after a review and retraining. Take the time and most importantly don't be intimidated or offended by what you find, as complacency offers comfort while change at first may hurt.
