As students we are wide eyed and overly excited by the process of learning .. sharing .. giving. We may follow the lead of a professor or two and eventually gravitate to a technique or philosophical principle that will carry us through many years of dedicated service. As a field doctor striving for a healthy practice .. gathering new patients and keeping them well maintained is the key to success and it all boils down to an excellent first impression. Remember the time you decided to be a DC. If you were like me .. it was a Teutonic change of thought from Sickness and Disease towards Health and Wellness .. from the aura of medicine to the wisdom of the body. Obviously my first impression with chiropractic was profound and everlasting. First impressions are crucial during every phase of the new and established patient process. Practice management starts with a well rehearsed and articulate initial phone call. Your CA should never be left with scripts and a mirror to practice her smile prior to answering the phone although this is probably the norm for most offices. The CA must have time to develop her skills after careful training with an emphasis on warmth .. caring .. knowledge and an assured confident ability. Their welcome and caring handshake from phone to phone must leave a lasting impression with the prospective new patient. So too when the new patient enters your office. Does it speak well of you? Be objective now .. consider yourself a practice consultant .. how would you rate the initial shock upon entering your office for the first time. Is it softened by your warm and caring staff or is it a cold and calculated process. Are your forms overwhelming and an immediate turn off or have you developed a smooth transition for the new patient gathering appropriate data without increased pain. Just remember that the impression you wish to project may also wind up being their first and last stifling any referrals or patient follow through. Spring is the season of renewal. This is the perfect time to generate excitement with special projects and programs. In-office holiday events such as Easter should be in the pipeline. Spring offers us an opportunity to reach our patients and community with tips to prevent over exertion injuries. Gardening and renewed exercising will begin in earnest providing us with phone calls from previous patients and potential new patient if they know you exist. Spring is also the time to work with the community.. church and civic groups would love to have a speaker discuss Health and Wellness .. corporations will benefit from ergonomic workshops .. postural stress screenings and health fairs. Begin a campaign to reach these folks but before you do .. get your act together. Write introductory letters and proposals. Practice what to say and how to answer their questions. Prepare material describing your project and have a calendar ready to offer your time. Be ready for success as the more new people you meet the more new patients you will have.
