The Finish Line

Another quarter at Life University wraps up .. this time .. I幢l be giving 115 graduating 
students their final test .. posting their grades and sending them off on a new journey .. 
the same journey that hundreds before them traveled during my two years teaching. 
The troubling fact is clear .. many of these same faces will pass the finish line and once 
crossing the line look to their left and right and never go forward. Why ... why go 
through all the years of study and hassels and never have a plan to succeed. I see 
many faces and attitudes .. the face of courage .. resolve .. purpose  .. fear .. doubt. The 
attitude of .. will it get better from here .. what do I do now .. I know it all .. I幢l save 
the world one adjustment at a time .. all these have their place and channeled correctly 
and creatively will eventually see the new chiroproduct through some tough start up 
times. Fear and doubt keep the best thespians on guard and therefore make for a great 
performance.

While thinking about this week廣 e-mail message many ideas came to mind. First I 
wanted to write about office perception .. I might later. Then .. I thought about 
commenting on a recent radio show hosted by a medical group where they danced 
around chiropractic but never found the need or desire to refer to us. Then I thought to 
comment on a new HMO package that came across my desk .. reducing our care to a 
subservient level and providing fees which would have allowed me a McDonald廣 
burger and fry after a full day廣 hard work. Unfortunately .. many will sign up. This 
would have also allowed me to tap into some within our profession .. even in political 
leadership .. who drag us down to a level of substandard fees .. literally reducing us to 
a technician. I could write and speak reams on this.

All these concepts would have overlapped into one another. It廣 like a football game. 
You receive the ball .. look to the left and right then with all your might .. guile .. skill .. 
and will power go forward .. to your goal .. the finish line. Yes there are barriers in 
your way .. you may have to shift one way or the other .. not by compromising your 
principles .. but nonetheless reaching that finish line called success and on the way 
helping those in need of your services. 

So .. my dilemma .. as with each quarter .. is to analysis my role in their success. Did I 
leave anything out .. was my lectures unclear .. was my written material worthless .. 
did I make a change in their lives? I can only speak and stand up for myself .. I tried! 
So .. why doubt the end result .... it廣 called human nature.


Our natural tendency is to doubt. Some have a great resolve and overcome their fears 
and doubts .. they forge forward never looking back. Others .. the majority .. have 
concerns and rather than dwelling on the positive find themselves being conditioned to 
protect themselves from any inevitable negatives .. rejection .. failure. This does not 
have to be. 

Reaching the finish line .. successful .. is the easy part .. the hard part is getting 
yourself out of the way. Many of the barriers we face are placed there by ourselves. 
All the years of study .. post graduate programs .. tapes and seminars you影e listened 
to or attended was for one purpose .. to decrease your doubts and give you strength in 
purpose. How often have you neglected to follow through .. neglected to implement .. 
rejected the material and ideas only to remain the same? Change is part of growth and 
life .. change can be good especially if this was your intention. 

My students must change .. they must make that transition from student to 
professional .. from clinician to doctor .. from promising to successful. If you are an 
established doctor be there for them .. they may come from Life or Logan or schools in 
between. Giving of your time and talent will be repaid to you in many ways .. we have 
all been there before. 

We are approaching a new year .. resolutions and all .. you know .. more of the same. 
Except this new year let廣 all make a pledge to change and serve more .. open our 
hearts and mind to our patient廣 and listen to the pulse of our community. Be good to it 
and it幢l be good to you. Our community includes you .. your family .. your staff .. your 
patient廣 .. and those you mingle with each day. My hope is that we all reach the finish 
line with a smile and a feeling that what we set out to do was done.
