The 6th Edition, AMA impairment Guides released December 2007 E-mail message this week: Final Thoughts One of my first writing assignments during college English was to write my obituary. It had to be a few sentences concise while encompassing an entire life. Where do I delete and where can I embellish while being powerful enough to interest and stimulate others about me. It felt like writing my biography on a match book cover. Luckily, I was younger then and the chapters were less full, but if I had to write it now the dilemmas would be the same. A kind e-mail reader sent a video link from an Oprah Winfrey show, which is all over the internet. The theme was getting grips on your eventual death. As harsh as it sounds, we do not live forever. So, if you had to discuss your pending death, what would you say and what message would you leave your family and friends? As a chiropractor, did you achieve your professional dreams and goals while managing to change the lives of others? Did you reach the goals of your patients and manage your practice correctly so no one was left behind? Did you spend wisely to incorporate choices in education and equipment so patients would receive the best of care? Were you open enough to look beyond your nose and reach for more? Did you do so ethically, honestly and with deep conviction and wisdom? Was there enough time to meet and greet community and corporate advocates, while teaching and screening for structural stress and cajoling their employees to value health and wellness and think ergonomically? What would be written on your matchbook cover? Take time to view the link below and savor every moment you have in this world. Consider less what you don't have and dwell more on what you have and how thankful you are for it. As chiropractors we have the ability to turn a life around, reach many through a few and literally help the Shepard tend to their flock. I believe in this and am relentless in reaching others, as I do each week when you read this. I hope I've stimulated one good doctor to be great. I believe in the law of compensation; give and you shall receive and have shared of my time with thousands worldwide with no compensation other than providing workbooks and presentations. If I had to leave this earth tonight, my cup is far from full, but it's not near empty either. Possibly this is a morbid topic a day after Valentines, but reflection is good and a check and recheck of your existence is always in order. See if you can reflect well on your professional activities and if you reduced all stops towards your forward movement. Be thankful for staff and patients and those that allow you the privilege to reach and teach, as we are nothing without people to touch. Above all, look kind and lovingly to family and friends as they carry us along during this journey of life. It's more we want, and as long as there is breath within us, it is more we can strive to be. Post Valentines, be sure to love those that need it, most importantly, yourself. Now take time to look, reflect and marvel at this courageous man and share his message with others. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8577255250907450469&pr=goog-sl Have a Great and Bountiful Day Dr. M Have a Great Day Postings: Dr. Joel E. I have been using it for a week and it is as advertised. A simple, patient guided cervical range of motion unit that takes little to no room and is attached to your computer by a USB cord. Patient places strap around skull and follows computer monitor's verbal and visual instructions while recording one to three complete cervical range of motions. The objective findings are recorded, easily reviewed with the patient and hard copies can be printed for insurance, attorney and patient records. The entire procedure takes very little time and would be invaluable for patient compliance and hard objective findings when necessary. I recommend you check their website: www.ty-q.com or call 770-880-7903 for information. I highly recommend this innovative diagnostic tool. Disability Assessment & Impairment Rating, Current Edition: Pain, Musculoskeletal, Neurological and Organ Systems. Session 1: April 12 - 13, 2008 Session 2: May 3 - 4, 2008, Session 3: June 7 - 8, 2008. This new program provides an overview of the major changes within the The AMA Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment Sixth edition. Additionally, a special update program will be presented entitled: Disability Assessment & Impairment Rating (Sixth edition): Evolving Concepts & Transitioning April 5 - 6, 2008 The 6th Edition, AMA impairment Guides released December 2007: Prior to the AMA Guides 4th Edition, range of motion assessment served as the foundation for defining impairment. With the 4th, published in 1993, the Injury (Diagnosis-Related Estimates - DRE) model was introduced and served as the primary rating method. Most impairments were categorized on the basis of clinical findings resulting in a fixed impairment number for each category; surgery did not modify the original impairment. The 5th Edition, published in 2000, uses both the Diagnosis-Related Estimates (DRE) and the Range of Motion methods dependent on the condition. Categorization was based typically on findings at maximal medical improvement, definitions for the categories were revised, and four whole person permanent impairment values were provided for each category. The 6th Edition, released December 2007, uses a methodology based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and ratings are based primarily on a specific diagnosis, which results in assignment to an impairment class (IC), using grids designed for this purpose. The impairment value within a class is further refined by considering information related to functional status, physical examination findings, and the results of clinical testing. Range of motion is no longer used as a basis for defining impairment since current evidence does not support this as a reliable indicator of specific pathology or permanent functional status. The use of the "most recent Edition" will be required immediately by certain state jurisdictions, statute or code (AK, HI, KY, LA, MS, MT, NH, NM, ND, OH, OK, PA, RI, TN, VT, WY) and will be required for Federal and Longshore & Harbor Workers' Act cases. The College on Forensic Sciences (CFS), a CCO and ACA affiliate, has added the AMA's Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment (6th edition) to the list of impairment rating products sold via its website. CFS offers these products to assist with their organizational objectives of providing, delivering and conducting educational and training opportunities for professionals seeking training in forensics, disability, impairment rating and federal programs leading to board or subspecialty certification.
