Doubt The most recent winter Olympics are now history with one of the most watched sport events, figure skating, remaining as a reminder to me how fragile the human psyche is and how it applies to Chiropractors. I watched intently the womenís figure skating events and had placed great faith that Sasha Cohen the young American, would finally win the gold and not falter as she has done in the past. She has a tendency to do very well in the short event but come short in the long event. So with that in mind, it was great to see that she was leading the pack after her beautiful short skate. Two days passed and the longer skate event was ready placing her as the Olympian to beat and the gold was hers to lose. During her practice session, with the television world watching and just prior to her competitive skate, she fell. The television cameras panned close to her face and there it was, that moment of truth, not to us but to her fragile psyche, Doubt. We knew at that one moment, she lost that one innate ingredient not found in practice sessions or learned through books, controlling doubt. She sparked doubt in her level of competence. The television commentators agreed as her face gave it all away. A minute or two later within the practice session, she again attempted a spin and spun again to the ground. As her skate began for the medal, she took here stance in the middle of the rink and began her beautiful long skate. The rest is history, she tumbled twice and her gold medal was gone. We knew it and she knew it too. How fragile the psyche is. But practice and competence did carry her through to take the silver. She didnít crumble under the pressure but withstood the inevitable and skated as best as the best and that was more than good enough. What is the chiropractic message? Simply, we are an emotional and competitive lot. Our daily interaction with patients and the community require confidence and practice that clears us for the long run of a successful practice. Our brethren are relentless to exploit marketing and public relations making our small share of the healthcare pie that less appetizing if we are ingredient short. The ingredient is confidence in our product and our ability to provide the service. Confidence that we are able to share information we gathered with our staff and community and our confidence that people will appreciate our message and follow our recommendations. This confidence is found within our education, post graduate seminars, maintaining our technical and esoteric edge via programs found during weekend courses or via the internet, www.mbachiropractic.com, listening to tapes or discussions with like minded colleagues. Confidence is a learned art but without the innate ability to rule our doubt, we are at the mercy of our fragile psyche. Is there a lesson to all this? Yes, after Sasha fell the second time, she fought the regrets, the remorse and drew inner innate strength to push the doubt aside and finished in a flourish. When was the last time you pushed aside your confidence and let doubt take hold? When was the last time you knew what a patient needed, but doubted they would comply and let them dictate the care they wanted rather than what necessary? Have you ever decided to give a workshop but doubted people would come or even if you were competent to give it? Doubt is real and our psyche pays the price. The lesson is to always strive for excellence and place your confidence in the practice and preparation with every event or patient planning. Doubt my friend, is no friend to you.
