Distasteful Marketing I spoke recently with a chiropractic college professor, who amongst other topics, attempts to introduce chiropractic marketing to her students. She asked me for tips, as her students feel most forms of marketing are either distasteful, unprofessional and probably borders on being unethical. How foolish is that? A report of findings is a form of marketing as is any pamphlet or written/verbal discussion with a patient or potential patient. Marketing or introducing chiropractic and sharing our knowledge and skills is vastly undervalued in our society and more of it, tasteful for sure, is extremely necessary. This teacher is not a chiropractor but a business MBA and leaving the art of practice building and practice management to a non-DC is foolish at best. No wonder so many DCs graduate with minimal practice starter protocols and only a wink and a prayer for success and once graduated and opening their office must flow with the wind hoping they catch the breeze of success. Marketing is a skill and knowing how, what and when is crucial. Practice management takes even more finesse and skill. These, and all chiropractic students, best realize that we are a profession often swimming upstream and against the tide. We need, nay, we must get the message out and the better amongst us succeed the most. Therefore the importance of professional practice managers or coaches and mentors are so helpful. Dr. Fernandez has a Practice Starters program offering sound time tested procedures to stimulate a new practice, little left to chance and wonder, a way to introduce yourself to your community and to know where to open and how to have a great first and lasting day. Marketing is a secondary problem for established doctors without a strong foundation and sound practice management and procurement procedures to maintain a practice. Patient management is more important as losing patients already in the Rolodex is both a sin and bad for business. Most consultants and weekend seminars cover these procedures both ethical and professional. You can easily plug the mechanics of textbook Marketing 101 into any chiropractic marketing program but the "art of survival and paying the bills mentality" is best left to a time tested doctor or staff member who has "paid their dues." The foolish DC tries and retries the same failed programs. The foolish doctor throws good money towards emotional schemes hoping to reap the rewards without spending time to investigate if others have succeeded or if it would be cost effective. General marketing and motivational ideas from CD and books are great and should be part of every DCs library and implemented within chiropractic. The wise doctor asks and listens to mentors and consultants if help is needed. Floundering with success is unacceptable.
