Continuing Education A few hours after writing this, I will be heading towards Marietta, Ga to attend the Homecoming of Life University. As a 1978 alumni, I am taking advantage of first seeing some old friends, looking over the school since stewardship has passed to Dr. Riekeman and getting my 20 hours of continuing education. Continuing education is a unique idea. Taken literally, it forces doctors to stay up on what is new in the profession. For others, it is a way to consolidate their adjusting techniques and analysis. For others still, it may be a way to reinforce their enthusiasm for their work, lower the embers of burn out and best yet, get some ideas to reinforce patient and practice management. Understandably, philosophy, patient and practice management are not offered for license renewal hours, but why not? Consider that step one of any business is a customer. Step two is the sale and step three is repeat business with a repetition of all three steps to keep the ball rolling. As doctors we have patients not customers, our sale is treatment plans and repeat business is referrals with repetition of all three steps being met by simply applying sound practice and patient management. Consider any less and your practice and potential to help others will suffer. Therefore placed under the right context, I think that every license renewal program should include a minimum of 4-5 hours of practice management skills. Some progressive states have this already in play. What about you, have you attended any practice and patient management classes lately? Do you consider them a waste of time and money? If under the roof of dedicated speakers with useful material and take home ideas for both doctor and staff the results can be momentous. As is too often the case after a weekend seminar, Monday morning is like any Monday morning. Too busy and too tired to make any changes and too confused with so many new ideas that digestion and execution is impossible. Stop here. Regroup your thoughts and decide before hand your approach to implement these new ideas. If your staff did not attend these classes you will have to reproduce the speakers urgency or practical advice. Decimation of ideas is difficult if the decimator has reduced the essence of the program to a mere decibel. Make it a point to set aside a breakfast, lunch hour or an evening away from the office and patients to woodshed the new ideas or just educate your staff on what you learned. Practice and patient management starts with service and this is all is based on a knowledgeable staff. If they also see the vision of patient health and wellness through chiropractic care you have a winning team and a proactive team to see that your office thrives and grows. So, if the end result of continuing education is to enlighten the doctor so he or she can provide a better and safer service than include proper service management as well. Just my thoughts. By the way, I have numerous hours of PowerPoint programs for both doctors and staff education. These programs are useful for continuing educational hours since they concern ergonomics, personal injury, demographics and community education and more. If you are interested in a breakdown, I can e-mail you the details. I would love to speak at your state or association convention.
