At the conclusion of my last e-mail,ÊI mentioned vacationing in Spain. As luck
has it, Jake Smith, DC, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Barcelona College of Chiropractic invited me to visit the school ifÊ my travels brought me to Barcelona. We chatted via e-mail and he mentioned an Open House for prospective new students, May 24, my first day in Barcelona. Driving for eight days from Madrid, Toledo, Garrrucha, Valencia and then Barcelona, I arrived in Barcelona tired but changed my clothes and walked a few miles from my hotel, to the Pampeu Fabra University building, whichÊhouses the Barcelona College of Chiropractic.

Prior to the invitation, I had no idea there was a chiropractic college in Spain and more important, one grounded on strong chiropractic principles and a purpose to educate a new cadre of multi national doctors. As of this date there are 19 countries representing the student body.Ê The curriculum is similar to CCE schools, a five year program similar to those found in the states with the ECC, European Council of Chiropractic endorsing and observing their program.

Most impressive is the diverse board of trustees, made up of doctors from various countries and schools, guiding the school towards ECU accreditation. Started in 2009, presently with 115 active students and soon reaching 175, their first graduating class will be in 2014. Dr. Smith describes the school .. ÒThe school is bilingual with students who speak Spanish learn to speak English and students who speak English learn to speak Spanish through the course of their studies. ÊDuring the first year there is simultaneous translation during class. The school is affiliated with Pampeu Fabra University, the number one university in Spain and the University Autonoma de Barcelona which is the number two university in Spain. Although the college is affiliated with these universities, it is autonomous when it comes to the curriculum, faculty and finances. ÊThe curriculum was created from the ground up and is based in the science, art and philosophy of chiropractic. ÊThe curriculum was designed to create leaders who are excellent chiropractors and have the proper business skills to run a successful practice.Ó

Arriving late, I missed the orientation, but I met Dr. Smith who is a practicing chiropractor in Palme de Mallorca, a graduate to Parker College and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Barcelona College. Though busy, we still had time for a short chat. Luckily a school tour was in progress so I tagged along. An extremely capable staff member was guiding these prospective students through the college and where chiropractic classes were held. Her enthusiasm for the school, the possibilities for graduates and the aspirations of the faculty and the Board of TrusteesÊwas infectious. If her enthusiasm is any example of the school spirit, then they are in capable hands and their future is quite secure

During one stop on the roof overlooking the streets of Barcelona, she described the city and student life. Let me tell you, this is one vibrant place and student life would be great, but prior to leaving the area, she mentioned a guest from the US, me, and asked if I would say a few words. Like my emails, a few words are not my specialty and I wasn't prepared, so IÊmay have rambled on a bit. But, I was happy to share my 35 years of experience and encourage them to study chiropractic allowing the school to provide the educational skills so they can make a difference in so many lives.

Imagine opening a new practice in fertile mostly virgin soil, guiding the community towards the reality of Life and Health versus the medical exploration of Sickness and Disease. Doctor, remember the day you started a practice, the fear of can I pay my students loans, can I provide for my family, pay rent, taxes and have something left for a Big Mac. We were all there and many reading this may still be in the doldrums trying to make it happen or ready to leave the cocoon of school. A strong educational base with a strong faculty and board guides us towards a successful career. To me getting started is exciting and a challenge whether the community is open to my chiropractic message or not or whether the laws vary state to state or country to country. With knowledge and a means to reach others with our chiropractic story, success is within reach.

From what I saw and heard, I endorse the goals of the Barcelona College of Chiropractic and encourage prospective students consider this school if their future will be in Europe or outside the US. This e-mail reaches 5000 chiropractors in 32 countries; many country chiropractic laws are not sanctioned by the CCE making the Barcelona college an educational option. It is diverse, cultural, tourist friendly and most important friendly to those wishing to challenge their desire to be well.

Out of 1,885 injured workers, 174 (9.2%) had low back surgery within 3 years of injury. The researchers discovered that if an injured worker was first seen by a surgeon, 42.7% would result in surgery, while if first seen by a Chiropractor, only 1.5% had surgery.
