E-mail message this week .. Bruce Almighty and Chiropractic is not as effective as we say

Just imagine you were given the powers that were bestowed upon Jim Carry in his latest 
movie Bruce Almighty. The plot is simple and I probably would not give anything away if 
I discussed the movie fully but suffice to say he has the power to do his bidding except one 
thing .. changing a personžs free will. Wow .. asking our patients to cooperate and follow 
their outlined exercises as well as follow our recommended care schedule. Their choice .. 
their free will.

I never lose sight or respect the privilege and responsibilities given to us. We have been 
challenged to maintain the flow of life energy and reduce the obstructive interference to 
physiological performance. These are high goals with feeble means to reach it and we need 
the free will of our patients to succeed. Curiously enough .. the doctor with the most 
success is often the one that can merge the will with reality and manage their cases 
appropriately.  

This movie is pure blasphemy if you treat it as such. Consider that chiropractors have been 
given such lofty challenges without the use of high tech diagnostic equipment .. mind and 
physiological altering chemistry .. drills .. pills  .. hammers .. sutures .. staples .. 
prosthetics .. transplants .. extensive testing .. intensive care .. nurse assistants .. extensive 
rehabilitation and all insurance paid can also be considered blasphemy as well. Can you 
explain how we have achieved our miraculous results unless there is much truth of what we 
do. Pure and simple .. adjustments work. Conservative and natural approaches to health 
and wellness works. Coordination between the healing arts with mutual respect works. 

I watched Bruce Almighty and enjoyed the antics of Jim Carry but I also was driven to 
serious thought .. if it were me .. what would I have done in his place and how could I 
have changed the world .. revamped the healthcare system .. purged my community of 
poor lifestyle choices and improper treatment protocols. Well .. dream on

Side story .. Chiropractic is not as effective as we say .. this is the story circulating within 
our national newspapers with some doctors feeling that this news may effect our insurance 
participation as well as our professional credibility. Once again the Chicken Little attitude 
with some Scare and Doom thrown in sticks its ugly head up and around our profession. 
We have always clung to paltry few science researchers .. those who we like we quote 
forever and with the occasional negative statements we cringe and dig a hole to hide in. 
Forget the negative within the story and see the positive .. people especially baby boomers 
are demanding chiropractic care. Do you think they had access to or care about previous 
research or did they find that our services is based on their present positive results under 
the gifted hands of a DC. I always recommend we let our state and national associations 
reply to occasional negative articles or television shows and leave it at that. Every reply and 
demand letter to publishers or campaigns to boycott only perpetuate the negative message. 
Our profession has so much to offer way beyond the ache and pain .. forget about 
questionable survey research and dwell more on your clinical results. Our future is bright 
and one episode of bad press is often read and forgotten and buried along with the paper it 
was written on.
