Q: I was asked to give a talk at an Assited living facility in town. They have a variety of speakers talk on topics from alternative care, arthritis etc. Do you have any ideas of what would be approriate? I liked your Fitness over 50 but not certain what to incorporate in it. Thanks again for your help. A: Thanks for your e-mail. Assisted Living facilities is one step prior to nursing homes. These folks want to remain mobile and active. They are searching for alternatives to drugs and surgery and welcome any advice to reduce the problems associate with arthritis. My Fitness over 50 program is right on the target. Mobilize some joints .. wrists and ankles .. ROM of the neck and lower back (slowly) .. seated knee to chest and holding a rolled up pair of socks in their palm for exercising the wrist and hand. Stress mobilization and safety. They must be cautious of falls and stress fractures .. so go over simple Lifestyle changes .. how they do laundry .. lift things from grocery carts .. stuff like that. Just be aware that they will welcome you there even if you do a soft show dance .. but telling them the chiropractic story will work better. Focus on mobilization and the chiropractic being conservative and safe. Be sure to let them know that Mdicare covers their care at 100% after the deductible but they don't pay for exam and x-rays and that is your offer if they want to be evaluated within a two week period. Lots of Luck Have a Great Day Dr. M
