Apprentice II Just got through watching the second week of the Donald Trump reality show the Apprentice. I wrote an e-mail concerning last season's show during an episode a few months ago and it was a huge hit. I received a number of replies concerning my thoughts. You can read this e-mail as well as five years worth on my webpage under Previous E- mails. This season proves to be even more interesting. Of course, there is a chiropractic message in all this. Decision making and leadership was the cornerstone of this week's show. A project manager was needed to delegate and lead by example setting the tone of each discussion and eventually deciding on a course of action. Failure came from indecisiveness and mayhem due to poor planning and hasty decisions. The challenge at hand needed quick teamwork and planning and the losing team were lacking in both. Doctor, how is your team, your office, your decision making ability and your planning? Ever wonder why practice management is seldom followed or your staff is haphazard with the fundamentals letting patients and procedures slip through the cracks? Is it poor planning, poor management, poor leadership or plainly burnt out that stands in your way?. There is little wiggle room here, either you are on or not. Another lesson learned this week is saying just enough to get by and when not needed to add to the discussion it's best to shut up. Doctors tend to micro-manage, never giving credit when it is due, rarely praising staff for the accomplishments and saying too much when working with patients. There is always a time and place but as Brad found out and Jennifer, I think that's her name, it's best to pipe down and let the flow of the moment lead the way. They both jeopardized their future when speaking when uncalled to. We chiropractors have so much to say, reporting our findings, discussing financial plans or providing a schedule and professional recommendations. At times a mere few words and a few stronger leadership directions from a doctor to their patient is all it takes and the patient is sold on your ideas and philosophy of health and wellness. But no, you feel compelled to share more and confuse even worse. Learn to accept the gift of an excited new patient without ruining their enthusiasm. Learn to keep quality of words to a peak and quantity to a minimum. Learn to lead and direct a new patient based on their individual data and plan their health and wellness routine .. they yearn and expect this from you, not a haphazard attempt to make the sale without selling yourself and expressing the wonders of chiropractic.
