Thank you for your e-mail. First, before I go into my best answer .. let me tell you why I am a chiropractor Prior to my first adjustment in 1972, I suffered for seven years with chronic duodenal ulcers. During this time, I swallowed six barium drinks for six separate Gastro Intestinal x-ray series .. each x-ray revealing a new and encroaching ulcer. I followed the advice of my medical physicians and felt as comfortable as others with their opinions for who ever questioned the medical community during this era. Prior to my last GI series .. 1972 .. I suffered with great pain and swelling. During these seven years, I was a great medical patient following the instructions of numerous doctors. In 1972, I was at my wits end with my social life dictated by the emotional overlay of my „out of controlū digestive system. To say I was frustrated and concerned would be an understatement. To make this long story short .. Ižll conclude by writing that a friend mentioned their chiropractor and chiropractic to me. Okay .. what was chiropractic? I had no answer, in fact at this point in my life, I never heard the word before. My friend (unfortunately like many patients) was unable to explain what chiropractic was but felt it would help .. and her encouragement provided the impetus that changed my life. I called and made an appointment although reluctant and skeptical. I traveled from Brooklyn, NY over three toll bridges to a small city in New Jersey to visit her chiropractor. This doctor is now one of our chiropractic leaders .. Dr. David Singer. At this point, he was in practice for just six months and had a great following of patients .. not because he had a charismatic personality but because what he did worked! I wish I could tell you that I experienced immediate results .. in fact I felt worse for awhile .. but the concept he provided me made more logical sense than the answers given by the medical community. I am not one to damn the medics .. they have their place for crisis care but what I dearly needed and wanted was to correct the cause of my problem and in so doing increase my health potential and wellness. Within the seven years of medical care .. with various medical physicians .. it was never offered to me. I was a chiropractic patient for one and half years before I decided to quit my life as a professional orchestral musician and enter a new career as a chiropractor. In 1975, I began my chiropractic studies and have never regretted or looked back. I continue to perform in my local community orchestra but the gift given to me upon graduation as a chiropractor and the lives I touched is worth every moment of study .. fear of starting anew business .. and the foolishness of insurance and other outwardly concerns that have no value in the big picture we call Life. I feel deeply that every person has a role as a citizen of this planet. There are many mechanics of the body .. medical specialist that know more and more about less and less of you. We have a dire need for knowledge to reduce interference to the human frame .. to clear a path for nerve energy to place its breath of life across the body .. what chiropractors call from above down and from inside to out. Itžs this philosophy of Life and Health that appealed to me over the medical concern of containing Sickness and Disease. They both have their place in the large scheme of things but as more evidence is being presented .. less is often the best choice .. let the body heal itself. The medical physicians with the greatest following today are not the great surgeons and pathologists .. its the time tested trend called Wholistic Physicians .. and there are many books they sell to a hungry public groping for conservative answers to what is called Preventive Health Care. They practice medicine less and less and answer to the inner wisdom of the body to heal. They may recommend diet .. meditation .. exercises .. conservative medical intervention .. but overall .. they respect the wisdom of the body to regain its health and maintain it. This concept is dated from the time of Hippocrates ..but lost within the politics and economic periphery of medicine. But this has been the credo of Chiropractic since the first adjustment in 1895. What creates our strength is what we carry in our bag of chiropractic tricks .. it is draped around a Philosophy .. Art .. Science. Although this may sound esoteric and confusing .. the chiropractor who is relating to their patients a means to contain and help aches and pains only .. is also lost and often driven to frustration .. as the true potential of chiropractic has never properly presented to them. I need go no further than my family .. three kids and wife to see that chiropractic care keeps us well .. and this is what itžs all about. This is where the excitement of why I do what I do is found. I appreciate your concerns as I have been blessed to have the opportunity to teach chiropractic students at Life University down here in Atlanta. My class has one purpose and one purpose only .. to assist each and every student to be as successful as they wish to be. Some will begin a practice on their own while others will work as an associate or rent space as an independent contractor .. some band together and form a group practice. The mechanics of making a living is the same in all professions .. wake up each morning and provide a service .. but what makes each of my days a special event is the service I provide is not duplicated by any other healthcare provider except a chiropractor and the know of the many lives Ižve changed .. just as was mine. I appreciate your anxiety of which profession and direction you should travel for your lifežs work. There is a great need for nursing and their work is as vital as any. The nurses I have as patients are very frustrated with their inability to make the changes they would like .. they are dictated by an archaic politically incorrect society called institutional medicine. Individual physicians, and I have many as friends, are shackled by various misdirections .. and if they step across the line into wholism they are often ostracized. Chiropractic is a profession that requires you to swim upstream .. to go against the norm and to answer to know one but you and your patient. If you have the foresight to see the vision and make the life changes both for yourself and for many many others .. I welcome you aboard. I recommend you continue the search .. as was your e-mail to me .. and determine the best place for you. Your chiropractor was kind enough to share my e-mail address with you. I have held the pulse of our profession since teaching for the past three years and having an active practice for the past twenty. Life University is the largest chiropractic college in the world .. over 3000 chiropractic students and a undergraduate and allied school programs with an additional 1000+. There is a vision here of the potential of man and I welcome you to visit and spend a few days to look around. I think the school offers living quarters to those from out of state .. if interested please let me know and Ižll arrange everything for you. Spend a day or so on campus before the final week .. which is within 3-4 weeks from today .. and walk the campus and ask questions to get a feel of how the male and female students feel about their education .. and their potential. I also encourage you to search Bridgeport College or any of the other fine chiropractic colleges in our country. Okay .. that was a long response to your question .. but any less would not be sufficient. I was living in Israel when I decided to go to chiropractic college. I wrote to many of the chiropractic schools which was published in a professional guide book. A true friend, Dr. Tedd Koren was a student at the time at the Sherman College of Chiropractic in South Carolina, and he became a pen pal writing and encouraging me .. just as I with you today .. and his encouragement was the impetus for me to leave the music profession of which I sweated years of study and enter the unknown .. just like you. His time writing me was not wasted because with each adjustment .. each class lecture .. each weekly e-mail .. and even with this e-mail today .. he changed my life and indirectly assisted so many more. I wish you no less. If I can be of further assistance please do not hesitate to e-mail me. Yours in Health Joel E. Margolies, DC
