Years ago I heard Dr. Joyce Brothers, the radio psychologist, make a remarkably powerful 
statement. She said vacations were once considered a luxury but today it is a necessity. She 
is right on. Beyond the factors of daily stress within the real world, all healthcare providers 
must tend to the aches and bruises of real life. Healing and mending the needs of others 
zaps energy from us and your staff as well as our families. Giving it your all may be 
sufficient one spine at a time but the accumulative effect takes its natural toll. Therefore, 
time must be found to regroup, refocus, reenergize and retool your mind, not just the body. 
Does that make sense? If not, you surely or sorely need a vacation bad.

Now what about your staff. Doctors have the habit of relegating their staff to the level of a 
servant rather than as a colleague. I realize there are various levels of staff knowledge, 
responsibilities and attitude. Being that you hired and trained them, what does that say? 
Staff always play an important role in our success. They are the first ones we look for 
when questions develop concerning patient schedules, payment history or why the volume 
numbers seems to fluctuate. If you doubt me, try operating a decent day without them. 
Many doctors neglect their staff, take them for granted and rarely acknowledge when things 
are good but are quick to condemn when things are bad. They are often verbally and 
emotionally abused. They too need some time off.

Now before you look on the web for a great airfare and lock in the hotel and resort price for 
a restful week, I am not talking about a physical vacation but the all important mental and 
emotional vacation, one that is away from the routine and often the mundane. A change of 
mental scenario and a respite from the usual and customary of where are the patients, how 
to get them, how to get reimbursed from insurance, asking for referrals etc. So, lighten up 
a few days per month. Change routine and be open to new ideas and especially ideas from 
staff. Acknowledge and bonus your them once goals are met and watch your practice 
bloom. Oh, take a few days off now and then, vacations were once considered a luxury but 
today it is a necessity.
