A step back If you have been reading your e-mails, you probably have been bombarded with appeals for us to get active and fight SB 1995. If you have been out of the loop or amongst my many overseas readers, SB 1995 is a pending US Senate Bill hoping to transform the health care insurance system of the United States. The concept on the surface makes sense, provide a haven to save money for the small businessperson by allowing them to purchase future insurance plans slimed down to their bare bones. Rather than mandating chiropractic coverage, along with some other alternative health care products, employers could pick and choose forcing their employees to accept programs not all-inclusive but restrictive in nature, eliminating chiropractic care as a choice. To offset many critics, the sponsors of the bill will provide a loophole allowing employers to offer expanded policies with additional services, such as chiropractic, but only if they wish to and with added employee expenses. The end result may be a step backwards in insurance coverage for our profession. In 1978, when I graduated from Chiropractic College, the state of Georgia did not have inclusive insurance coverage. The majority of policies written within the state left out chiropractic care as an offered service leaving the majority of our patients fending for themselves and paying out of pocket the entire expense. For all of you caring less and happy with your cash plans, and being absent from insurance restrictions, there are far more doctors relying on insurance to bolster their patient volume and revenue. For patients deciding to utilize chiropractic only if their insurance pays, this will reduce their ability to receive their necessary adjustments and strain the relationships between the office and themselves. Petty and foolish on the surface, but in reality, true. The concern is not for one state but since this will be a federal mandate, all states will enact this as law and the ripple effect will be heard everywhere. Rather than a screaming Chicken Little with false and misleading fears, the fact that we are once again may be delegated to the back of the bus, excuse my analogy, and brushed aside along with the millions of patients taking advantage and desiring our services is the concern here. We have reached a point in our history where one would have thought that our services are required to reduce the wear and tear in all walks of life and our clinical results have proven once and for all that our care has lasting and healthy results. But, once again our vulnerability shows and our defensive posture has been primed. We have a financial concern and objectively our universal stand against this pending bill may be looked upon as such. But, more than this we are on the front line of the health and wellness of this country and we also see the devastating outcome if millions of people in these trying economic times decide whether to fill their tank with expensive oil or get their adjustment with way more than their usual insurance co-pay. Doctor, whether you are for or against using insurance in your office, we all should be for universal rights for our patients. Stepping back to the past is not in anyone¹s interest. We need to understand this legislation and put a stop to it or at least a guarantee that primary providers, such as chiropractic, be included in any policy, not excluded as an alternative elective. Determine who your congressional representatives are and gather their phone numbers, e-mail and snail mail addresses. Get involved by visiting the ACA and ICA webpages to read the legislation and gather the material and knowledge to both fight it and most importanr interest your patient to do the same. This is crucial and now is the time. Seating back and doing nothing insures a step backwards.
