Value of Your State Association Last night was the second time in over 25 years, that I remember, attending any district meeting of my chiropractic state association, the Georgia Chiropractic Association: www.gachiro.org . Their Tuesday monthly meetings coincide with my orchestra rehearsals so, unfortunately I am an inactive member that supports their tireless efforts to help our profession grow. Meeting in a Steak and Ale restaurant seemed the perfect setting for the jousting that took place when statewide district borders were discussed and opinions and theories ignited into a friendly but serious discussions. Our attorney lobbyist presented the most recent opinions by the state attorney general concerning our ability to refer to other healthcare providers, especially for MRIs and the like, he seemed excited. Minutes were read and recorded as with protocol while the associationšs representative with the ACA discussed their recent lawsuit with ACN and board members were chosen and agreed upon. Between eating and jousting, this was just a partial list of the eveningšs events. I was a silent observer, not making a peep. I usually react as an outsider, especially when they and the eveningšs agenda was serious and I was previously not involved. How many of you are paid members of your state or national association but, like me, are inactive. Time or distance usually prevents most of us from attending meetings or getting involved in any official capacity. Thankfully others have the wisdom and foresight to realize that someone must step to the plate and act and react in our behalf, those paid and even those not members at all. The political lobbying; the hand wringing to introduce proactive legislation or fend off the negative within the other camp; the hours committed to attend meetings and receive harried calls with deadlines to meet not to mention the liaison relationship with other chiropractic and allied associations to assure our profession has a respectful seat at the general table of healthcare, is a lot to chew. Personally, it is more than a mouthful for me, but I respect those that can chew and spit it out when needed. Only collectively can we manage managed care or fight the ridiculous restrictions or non-paid services that we should be fully compensated for. So, this leads me to a question, if not, why are you not a member of your state association? Here in Georgia we have two, maybe your state has more. We thrive in numbers and everyone should be involved. It is not enough to just attend conventions to pick up hours for license renewal. It is not enough to send a few dollars of donation when a legislative crisis presents itself. It is never enough to just sit on the sidelines and let others do your work. Fine, like me, you can or will not do the physical labor but financially, you can make a difference. Associations meet with the state legislatures and hire the lobbyists and get the word out with grass root legwork. They keep an active eye on legislative bills that would harm your income and diminish the numbers of people you serve. They provide the timely seminars that enhance your knowledge and give you the hours necessary to work the year ahead. They do it with or without your input or voice. If you care to make a difference and add to the basket of ideas, your involvement can be as little as a membership check, a timely e-mail or face to face interaction, but your involvement is necessary. I hope that this stimulates some interest. Check with your state association, pay the yearly dues and if necessary, get on a payment plan, but plan to join today.
