Read about the closing of Cleveland Chiropractic College of Los Angeles E-mail message this week .. Starting Over or Starting Anew It's exciting to start a new practice. As my student intern graduates from LUCC and anticipates opening her practice in Va. and a dear friend is creating a new practice after a few years outside of chiropractic, my mind starts to churn in anticipation of the baby steps and giant leaps necessary to start or jumpstart a new practice. Then I realized that each day I practice is a new creation that without proper tending and cultivating will whittle on the vine and be no more. So each day is literally like starting anew. So, let's put on our thinking caps and outline what we need to do to make the first day a success. Okay, what legwork is necessary to plant the rows of seeds ready to spring into Harvest after a few months? Hey, without hard work and a few calluses there is no glory. Without beating the bushes to stamp out the weeds and make room for the roses there is no beauty. Without opening our mouths and reaching beyond our comfort zones to ask folks their interest in our work and what we can offer there are no patients. Without canvassing our community for opportunities to create something from nothing there will be no stream of new patients and no interest in us, as we do not exist. So, let's get to work and just outline the basic Starting A New Practice 101. Once a location is picked out and business cards are in hand, it's time to hand them out. Jim Parker used to say: WOC or whip out cards. Everyone you meet from the florist to the hairdresser, from the waiter to the plumber you give them your business card and say the magic words. "I'm the chiropractor around the corner (oh, first we'll concentrate close to our office to fertilize your growing farm where we are planting these success seeds) and I just opened or I have a chiropractic office between this street and that close to the library, give them a landmark if there is one, and I'd love to have you come by and meet my staff and take advantage of our educational programs and chiropractic. I'd also love to include you in my e-mail address book, so I can send you timely e-mails about my office with healthy tips throughout the year," or something to that affect. The key is to gather e-mail addresses and create folders specific to the kinds of work or activity they do and focus your e-mails to these specific groups on a regular basis. Next. Let's search for places to target, like an office park or building, a library, a school, municipal building, houses of worship and create a database of these facilities with addresses and phone numbers including their program chair people, safety directors, benefit personnel etc. You can find many of these locations by driving around your office area, about five miles or so, and start writing down addresses and names. In some areas of the country you can find a Haynes Directory at the local library which may have the office address and phone numbers or you may have to canvas other resources like the Chamber of Commerce, or the yellow pages either on paper or online. Once you have created this list, sorted by types of work: clerical or labor you then begin the phone and e- mail campaign. Contact by gathering names of people that can make things happen like a topical workshop, a screening, a health fair, an ergonomic evaluation and more. Again, no hard work no glory. Printing these ideas and placing it below your phone will not make it ring with new patients. But, printing these ideas, delegating some action steps and being persistent in getting it done will make it happen or at least give your direction and hope. Remember, there are only three ways to make a living within chiropractic. Increase your fees, increase your services or increase your volume. Being cost effective and smart is the key in all these areas. Check your location for these four components of demographics: Retail Residential, Clerical and Labor, the rest is getting the word out. People are always available as patients, you just have to meet them half way. There is too much material to cover here. As you can see, I can write a book about these basic ideas and beyond. Oh, I have. You can purchase my books by visiting my webstore: www.chirosmart.net/.shop and while there check out my Powerpoint presentations. I price everything affordable so there is no excuse to get it right. Also, we have many consultants and weekend seminar gurus, you can check their webpages while visiting my webpage: www.chirosmart.net and look under Weblinks and Seminars. I am also for hire during your next seminar, convention or state association meeting. I have a twelve hour program on practice management, marketing and communications. E-mail me for information. Guidelines are available under Scholarships at http://www.straightchiropractic.com/page/-Sylva-Ashworth Deadline for submission is May 1, 2011 Closing of Cleveland Chiropractic College of Los Angeles: In a press release today, Cleveland Chiropractic College system president, Dr. Carl Cleveland III, announced the decision of the Board of Trustees to cease operations at Cleveland Chiropractic College-Los Angeles in 2011. Cleveland is in the process of finalizing a transition program with Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCU) that will address the currentLos Angeles students' ability to complete the DC degree at their scheduled time of graduation. Cleveland-LA alumni are a cherished and integral part of the Cleveland family. As this campus closes, you become the embodiment of Cleveland-LA. It will not be a building or a program, but a network of graduates who continue changing lives through chiropractic. As a member of the Cleveland family you will continue to have access to alumni services (i.e. academic records, transcripts, etc) via the alumni page at www.cleveland.edu or by calling 913.234.0600. The decision to close Cleveland Chiropractic College of Los Angeles has been difficult for the Board of Trustees; however, challenging economic conditions and a continuing downward enrollment trend impacting the California chiropractic colleges dictates that this consolidation is necessary. This change will have no effect on Cleveland Chiropractic College-Kansas City, which is a separate college that has maintained an affiliation with Cleveland-LA since 1951. Cleveland-LA has a long, spirited history and has graduated thousands of well- trained, successful chiropractors who have gone on to provide care to countless patients. Over these many years, the faculty and staff have made an invaluable contribution to society, the profession, the community and countless families and individuals. We are forever grateful for our employees' dedicated service to the mission of this institution. We extend our sincerest best wishes for the future to all who work and study here. Carl S. Cleveland III, DC President Cleveland Chiropractic College Kansas City and Los Angeles
