Standing Your Ground There comes a time in every career or life journey when you have to take a stand and do what is right for you, your family, business and friends. They say that mixing business with pleasure usually ends bad and mixing family with business, if not monitored closely, end less that expected as well. Aside from this, mixing your power and convictions of natural healing along with compromising thoughts of using allopathics prior to letting nature do what it needs to do may be the genesis of losing your strength as a healer. I write this because if you and I don't stand our ground and educate and teach what we know and appreciate as being true, then those that come for our assistance will drift away along with the rest of the medical debris and failures. Same is true for relationships whether family, friends or patients. There are many paths we travel to an end, some paved smoothly while others provide a rocky road. If the goal is reaching the same conclusion, why make it choppy. Why not establish parameters by starting the relationship with common terminology like life and health, peace and serenity, give and take while working on the common theme of a wholesome friendship or professional participation. Patients will test our resolve by missing appointments, no big deal if you are not grounded in your purpose as a professional and doctor/teacher but a very big deal if you want them well. Friends will test your resolve by bypassing the non-verbal agreement to reduce relationship stress, provide less manipulative guilt and make you a weigh station of burden. Try as you might to walk the path of right not wrong, there are forces penetrating our senses creating compromising decisions having long term ramifications both social and business. Have you ever felt uncomfortable prior to that thrust realizing the patient's outcome may not be as expected or the patient asking a favor breaking your bond of professionalism that winds up biting you on your proverbial buterial cheeks? Ever given in to the patient requesting less care when more was needed and they drop out, damn you and our profession all because you didn't stand your ground and tell it like it is. Relationships both social and business are built on solid trust. Those taking advantage of that trust find weakness and holes in the relationship sacrificing much in the process. Patients call you for help, not to socialize, while friends call you to socialize not treat. Patients need to be directed, friends need to be nudged. Patients need to understand while friends need to be there. Patients need to learn the rules of engagement while friends need to engage. Patients have a vacuum of understanding need filling while friends fill the vacuum that is you. Patients should be taught not coerced while friends need neither. When patients become friends the dynamics often change, creating issues unforeseen, issues that was clearly behind the line but now obscured. Confusion between the lines is the crux of the dilemma called Life. When the lines are crossed and patients/friends demand more than we can give or more than we should give you must draw conclusions that will foster the best for both. Be objective and stand your ground for the sake of all, they need your encouragement but more your commitment to what is your ultimate purpose, their wellness and/or friendship Stand Your Ground Have a Great Day Dr. M Postings: Dr. Joel E.
