A Spark The other day I was talking with a chiropractor that developed a jump in both new patients and therefore patient volume. His practice had floundered for a while producing both despair and heaviness within his practice and personal life. It was difficult to speak with him without attracting some of his problems and when sharing any good news or advice it was quickly squashed with more negativity. You get the picture. What happened, almost overnight, was a dramatic shift from ³it canıt happen to me to why not.² This spark of energy came from an unlikely source jump-starting his practice and most importantly himself. As he told me, his CA was getting a bit disgusted with the heaviness surrounding the practice and especially the intimidation she felt from this doctor since the numbers were down. After a short vacation, she returned to the office and told the doctor she was ready to quit unless he turned things around. Imagine that, she reversed the negative energy that he was shooting her way and placed the blame where it belongs, on him, the owner and the chief negative and despondent instigator. She reminded him of how things were, how he spent a bit more quality time with patients and had a creative flare to everything he did. She reminded him how often she would mention an idea or an encouraging remark only to have it squashed and repressed. She reminded him that he was not fun to be around anymore and the patients were picking up on this. Most important she reminded him of who he was, a successful DC who has helped so many people for so many years. And, she stuck to her guns, she quit after her two weeks notice. Rather than change, the doctor did nothing, not even place an advertisement for a new CA. He never thought she would leave. The office numbers were low enough that he handled it by himself ,but remaining patients questioned where the CA was and why no replacement, the too began to quit. What changed things around was a shift of energy and roles. After a few weeks, the CA came by to pick up some personal items and with her came a wind of change. She asked the doctor if she could work for him strictly on public relations and in full control of new patients. She would do this only if he was ready to change back to his old ways, caring for the patients and himself. She laid out some ideas and a budget to get started and even provided a name for a new front desk CA. Her time would be spent outside the office, discussing chiropractic to the community, networking with established but long forgotten patients, and gathering energy for promotions she had in hand. Her enthusiasm, sparked by her few weeks of private time considering her future and realizing it was meant to be within chiropractic, generated this renewed excitement for chiropractic and chiropractic community education. She created a game plan, flyers, promotions activities and time-lines necessary to get any office either off the ground or to new heights. She had the background and knowledge; she just needed a vehicle to run it with. Lucky for my friend, she respected him enough to offer this to him first. As she mentioned her ideas, he began to question and doubt, she quickly read him the riot act. Before long, she was in charge of what she had a handle on, community and patient education. He finally listened and he rest will hopefully remain as a solid and beneficial history lesson for all.
