Tune then tone As many of you know .. my previous professional life was as a professional orchestral French Hornist .. and I still keep my lips active in my local community orchestra. The other day during a rehearsal and while the orchestra began to tune .. I thought of the ingenuity of tuning that prepares for the impending tone. First the oboe .. then the winds .. brass .. strings. The conductor must wait and only when everyone is ready to join in as a whole does the rehearsal or concert begin. The sound transcends and binds into a homogeneous tune in tonality .. a symphony. Two days ago .. I was the guest speaker of the Life University fraternity. As I began my discussion entitled .. State of the Profession .. I began to outline the integral components creating the endurance and sustenance of a creative and successful practice. Each component a piece of glue that cements the whole .. tuning for the tone that is your purpose and goal. As you walk into your office tomorrow .. give this some thought. Have you set your goals on paper and read it before the day began? Have you affirmed your goals and imaged the concept toward reality? Have you discussed the day with your staff and listened to their desires to assist you in your goals? Have you concepted new patients .. referrals .. growth? Did you tune .. before starting the days concert? As with the orchestra .. each component (musician) should have practiced .. when all is ready and set .. it¼s a GO. When I was teaching my class at Life .. I spent a two hour class session on hiring and training staff (chapter four of my Smart Start Book). This instrument of your orchestra is vital. Have you ever felt there was a lack of focus within your office .. a lack of tuning. Trust me .. without the proper tone of the conductor (you) and musicians .. you have only noise .. not music. All the tuning .. pulling of your ears .. rubbing your eyes as you glare at the score for answers wont help .. you must first tune up .. and this first from agreeing and dedicating the office tone. Focus .. first on your purpose .. your office purpose . your community purpose concerning Health and Wellness .. are you dedicated to tell the chiropractic story .. to tell those who depend on your knowledge and skills? Are your staff also dedicated to this journey (score) or are they there to fill a space and ask for their paycheck? Is this the tone blurs your vision and forces continual tuning without change? Solution .. take a moment and write a State of Your Office memo. Is each component tuned or are there areas that need further tuning and more practice? Discuss this with your staff and be the conductor .. lift the baton and when you start the initial downbeat .. let there be harmonious tuneful music.
