Q: Hello Dr. Margolies, I have been practicing for 2 1/2 years in a partnership. We are primary insurance and cash, but would like to also get involved in personal injury, workers comp, and Medicare. I honestly don't really know where to start. Our only PI cases have been current patients that were in accidents, about 6 since we opened. What are your suggestions? Any help will be greatly appreciated A: Thanks for your e-mail. As far as getting a PI practice going you need to contact the legal community. Start with the yellow pages and begin calling attorney firms under Personal Injury. Get the names and addresses and e-mail addresses of the attorneys doing PI as well as the names of their paralegals. Begin a writing campaign expressing your interest in working with them and then call them in a few days to either meet with them or discuss your interest with their staff or the attorney. Although there is lots of competition here .. they may have a client living or working closer to your office than the DC's they know elsewhere in the city. Begin a newsletter .. better an e-mail campaign to these attorneys. Using the internet use the search engine to search keywords like whiplash .. soft tissue injury etc. and cut and paste material that may be of interest to you and therefore to them. The more you provide positive material to them the more they will feel comfortable to work with you. As far as knowledge .. there are many books and tapes available including impairment courses. Arthur Croft has great classes as does Dan Murphy .. keep your eyes out for their material in Dynamic Chiropractic newspaper. I have an inexpensive workbook called the PI Workshop Workbook that may be useful for you. As far as Medicare .. you need to start with your own patients. Begin by surveying your patients and see if there is interest for a workshop titled Aging Gracefully. Also determine if the local churches have a seniors group and provide workshops like this during their meetings. I may have an outline if you visit my webpage and scroll to the bottom of the Cyberconsulting area. In fact if you search this area there may have been questions like yours that I have nswered before. Below is a Medicare video that is worth its weight. I recommend you purchase it Medicare Video and Booklet for sale: If you provide services for Medicare and have questions, this may be the answer you have been looking for. Dr. Gary R.
