Q: Dr. Margolies I have found your web site and it looks like a lot of work. The question is I'm going to do my first spinal screening and would welcome any advice. The only place I can have one close to my location is in a grocery store. do they work in that location? And how or where is the best location? I do not have any malls around but plenty of food markets sense I live in the downtown area of my city. A: Thanks for the e--mail and question. First .. my Smart Start Book has an extensive portion in chapter four concerning every aspect of screenings including scripts. If you have the book .. look there. There may be something under Cyberconsulting and/or Practice Tips on my webpage .. look there as well. Spinal Screenings are great. I will be sending your e-mail to another DC who loves doing these and has great success. He may or may not reply but if he does .. I hope hežll assist you. Screenings are public evaluations. There are a number of avenues to approach this. First it can be educational only .. handouts and flyers given to the public if hands on screenings are not allowed. Postural screenings if you have the ability to touch folks and provide them with conservative answers and an ability to get more after a better exam at your office. Health Fairs where you combine both. These are screening possibilities. As far as where to screen. Look for business parks .. office atriums .. warehouses .. Samžs or Walmarts etc. Supermarkets are just as successful .. you can be an advocate of the supermarket if you combine collective energy. have a table and chairs set up in an area with some room. Place on the table some handouts and flyers of general health concern button issues such as stress .. headaches .. muscle cramps etc. Flyers should include something about your availabilty to provide workshops at their place of work .. church .. civic club etc on these subjects as well as ergonomics. Have a small round goldfish bowl on the table where they can place survey forms or cards that you will provide to win a door prize such as dinner for two at a local resturant ..this will provide you a data base of local folks to send newsletters and keep your office in their mind. Also .. what helps get you into these areas is an affiliation with a local charity .. the Red Cross always welcomes you to do BP screenings for the public .. give them a call and see what is required .. usually not much. A local charity also helps to get the people from the screening into your office .. a small donantion $10+ to the local charity will secure their appointment .. usually money finds them following through. In a supermarket .. you can go down the aisles and choose items that are low in fat or low in salt and set a table of items found in the supermarket that will improve their overall health and then tag it with chiropractic .. the supermarkets love it. You can align yourself with local food bank and ask for a can or non perishable food donations for their appointments. Be creative.
