Focus Philosophy Weekend in the Poconožs E-mail message this week: Scrutiny and Humility I promised to keep this message impersonal. The message is important for everyone to read and use as they wish. For some of us it will strike home and for others .. well .. letžs hope it never does. This was related to me recently and rather than embarrassing the doctor involved .. let us just say it could be any of us. Okay here it goes. A few months ago .. a letter was sent to this DC from their state board of examiners requesting they appear before their hearing board since someone sent in a complaint. The hearing was dated for six weeks after receiving their formal letter that also mentioned the doctor may wish to bring an attorney. Wow!! All calls to their board was met with .. "you will know who and what when you attend the hearing." Can you imagine .. if the DC was fresh out of school how demoralizing and off on the wrong foot this would be. If a veteran doctor .. how humiliating after years of proud service to be called to the carpet for whatever misstep may have occurred. Let it be said this doctor had many a sleepless nights .. powerful reflection of what could have happened and suspicion of every procedure and patient communication. The DC scrutinized years of service .. stupid things said and years of missteps that luckily slid by. Even the best of us have some ghosts in our professional closets .. words that should have never been said .. procedures that were questionable at the time and staff that were let go in a huff. Years of scrutiny take weeks of reflection. Years of scrutiny take moments of joy and turn it quickly into instant humiliation as one ponders if others only knew. Trouble was .. who knew what .. what and who questioned anything the DC did and how serious would this reflect on their practice .. family relations .. income .. future. This DC when relating this to me was as serious as a heart attack .. they were going through hell. As many of us know .. dealing with the public .. especially as a "hands on" chiropractor .. has built in risks. Weekend seminars and discussions with colleagues often provide us with instant new methods as we try new procedures that are often left misunderstood by our patients while we attempt to get the message out. Regardless of philosophy and technique .. we are all prone to saying or doing the right as well as the wrong thing .. even for a split moment .. leaving the patient wondering. Consider the numbers of people you see .. the days upon days of adjusting ..itžs just a matter of time before you also may be called to the carpet. This e-mail is meant as a wake up call for you and me and for us to scrutinize our procedures .. what we say to our patients .. the perception we leave behind and to realize that we are in a very politically correct word where advocates can very easily send shivers down your spine. This DC appeared before the state board and cleared up a very touchy issue .. a matter of perception .. but real to the patient nonetheless. The patient had to write their thoughts to the board accusing their doctor and the doctor had to defend the indefensible whether right or wrong. The weeks of scrutiny was met with overwhelming humility and therefore a message for us all.
