The Report of Findings I confess that the weakest area of my patient management is a strong, enduring, value packed, uncompromising and everlasting report of findings. Practice Management 101 has as the bedrock of every patient encounter, a strong foundation based on credible and indisputable evidence. A walk through the new patient's life; their history of traumas, work, social and sports repetitive activities creating wear and tear, familial structural weakness and discussion of their overall lack of health from their various co-morbidity factors, nutritional inconsistencies and whether they need to exercise, diet or even put on a few pounds that brought them to your door. That's a mouth full and lots to say but if presented in a digestible, caring and concise manner, the results will be phenomenal. A win-win for all. Set the stage by having the correct props, scripts and words to their song of life. Picture every new patient as an opportunity to reach all those they know from family, friends, co- workers, sports teammates and those attending church with. That's a lot of folks and people you can reach indirectly by placing skillful seeds of enlightenment with your new patients. How many of their doctors have taken time to listen and then share with the patient, not many. How many times have they left their doctors office with homework, such as exercises, lifestyle and ergonomic changes and a clear understanding why they came in and more important a plan to get well, not many. How many times have they left their doctors office with the impression that the doctor listened, related back their concerns and with compassion provided a new direction both therapeutic and proactive to avoid a like problem in the future, not many. And most important, how many of these folks left their doctors office enthusiastic to tell their friends of their great find, a doctor that listens, cares and has a plan, not many. Doctor, it's all in the report of findings that followed a well listened to consultation and a well organized and specific examination. All ears at first, all eyes next then all mouth. We need to step back and realize that a successful business transaction requires every facet in place with little compromise and a strong finish. Gather the information, sense their level of urgency and commitment then seize the moment. If this seems foggy to you, visit your local library and check out some sales books, especially concerning the close. There are so many motivational sales speakers that a search within Youtube will be a treasure trove of inspiration. We are in business to help others and failure is no option. Leaving details out because your presentation lacked the ingredients I mentioned above is no excuse. Laziness and complacency is no excuse and our economic times warrant more commitment. So, get out your pencils and paper and create an outline prompting you to concisely report back to the patient what they need to hear, not what you feel they will commit to. Create that checklist so your report is strong but enduring and leaves little for the new patient to question. Show and tell and provide an outline of what you can offer and never x-ray their wallet to determine if they can afford it, offer than discuss. Provide options that may or may not be covered by their insurance such as supports, rehabilitative exercises, adjunctive therapy, nutrition, cold laser and other service you have within your office.
