E-mail message this week: Reaffirm your Purpose .. 10-9-98

The purpose of my weekly e-mail is to be uptone and towards a successful practice. .. not a Drudge type report and an airing out of one crisis after another. Many of you have written to me and to others concerning the recent barrage of negative chiropractic press. This past week Good Morning America and some local TV stations ran a story about chiropractic and strokes. The most recent issue of the New England Journal Of Medicine concerning their research project on chiropractic care for children's asthma and the associated press run of it was all over the newspapers. Also .. some jerk is writing to many of us via e-mail that chiropractic care for children is malpractice at best. These reports and others are also posted on my webpage under Chiropractic News .. I will continue to post these issues there.

So .. this is my comment. Today we live in a media rich world. Many of our concerns also concern the general public as well .. this includes over utilization of drugs .. improper medical diagnosis with adverse reactions .. surgical procedures that are costly and unnecessary .. a geriatric community that is at the mercy of their physicians who utilize various medications that have multiple adverse reactions .. outrageous claims for medical diagnostic procedures that not only are very costly but later are found to have limited benefit .. new medications that have killed and permanently impaired people that are still on the market. People who read and listen to the press are aware of this .. and they demand answers and changes. Never in the history of our world has so many people searched for alternatives to their medical care. Never in the history of the world has so many people spoken up to their doctors and demanded other opinions or alternative to their problem. The medical and pharmaceutical world are concerned .. concerned enough to squeeze. As the economic pie chart begins to shrink and the dollars are being spent less on medical procedures and drugs .. those concerned react .. and their reaction will affect us. Yes .. we need to be concerned .. we need to have answers .. we need our peer reviewed research to counter the charges that chiropractic care is useless for this or that. But should you ..the individual doctor or student be so concerned as to fear your economic future or withdraw the enthusiasm to adjust your patients as before .. Absolutely not!

Think about it .. how many politicians have been to chiropractors and appreciate the care they received? How many in the print and audio/visual media have been to chiropractors with the same positive reaction? How many medical physicians have more respect for our role in healthcare than in previous years and have referred their patients and been adjusted as well? How many millions of people have we adjusted .. including children and the elderly .. and how many of them have told countless others? This is our army .. our proof .. the defense against repeated attempts to contain our profession. They will not let others dictate their desire to be and stay well. As we serve we reap the reward .. respect. They will respect you if you respect yourself and the profession we serve. Chiropractic care is not duplicated .. it is not transferable .. it is an entity that stands alone but is a part of the healthcare puzzle that is man. Remember this. It is not exclusive .. people may also need medical intervention .. a sane person should not deny that .. our problem is the reverse is also true .. chiropractic care should not be seen as an elective health benefit .. but a frontline leader.  

My future e-mails will concentrate on reaching these people .. our community. I don't have to look beyond my family to see the results of chiropractic care .. for myself .. my wife .. and my three children. I don't have to read the latest research paper screened through medical bifocals to allow me the confidence to keep my family and patients well with chiropractic care. My proof is visual .. I see the difference between my kids and their friends .. I see the difference between the children of my chiropractic friends and I have lots and the general pediatric public .. I see the difference between the children that are my patients many of whom have grown up with chiropractic care and are young adults now and their friends .. their parents have told me repeatedly. My proof is objective .. I am a scientist .. a researcher .. a healer .. a compassionate person .. this is me. My years in chiropractic school .. trained in biomechanics .. anatomy .. and other subjects allowing me additional knowledge is my rationale to use my trained skill as a chiropractor and educate all those that wish to hear about my desire to help .. their results are my proof .. their excitement when they understand the predicament of our species and the importance of subluxation management. They refer their family and friends and the story grows .. we are not all fools .. this is my proof. I don't deny the miracles of medicine .. and they have many .. I will never deny them their place .. just don't challenge me until your house is in order .. their proof may be found on slabs in county morgues .. permanently impaired patients .. those walking wounded who trusted the medications and are never the same .. come on.  

I challenge the leaders in our profession from every label and stripe ..  put your labels aside .. let us concentrate on the spine .. the subluxation .. the reality that it exists .. the fact that wellness is better without a subluxation and adjustments are meant to correct this deficit .. simple truths without the trappings of how many visits .. what diagnosis .. mercy or no mercy .. I challenge our leaders to put their boxing gloves on the table .. establish a clearing house of chiropractic peer research .. assist financially every recognized CCE school to research more and in conjunction establish a profession wide clearing house .. let our technic leaders join in and vendors help support our PEER accepted research .. not the numbo jumbo medical reality which may be real to them .. but very unreal in clinical observations to us. 

In conclusion .. unless I am a genius .. I've helped hundreds of kids with asthma and like respiratory conditions .. many after medical procedures have failed. One of the reason many of our old time chiropractors turned to chiropractic was because of asthma and like symptoms. Is the New England Journal of Medicine for real .. are their double blind studies of just a handful of patients to be accepted by us. Even if their findings were accurate .. based on their postulates of research parameters .. it is no way conclusive based upon our own findings every day .. in every office worldwide .. come on .. should they have posted their findings for the general public to read .. or should we be posting our findings .. I think we should be doing our own peer research and letting the public know .. they have a right and we have an obligation to tell.

Have confidence in your work .. be powerful in your resolve .. place faith in your resources .. go back to the well .. your alma mater .. support their research and those that promote your technic .. stay the course. Negativity is contagious and can spread like an epidemic. Our detractors depend on that and the new communications venue .. e-mail .. is a great way to spook us all. I recommend you blind copy your group e-mails .. ask your internet provider how. 

Now go out and strengthen your chiropractic beliefs and adjust for the health of it.

Chiropractic research .. is there a resource?

 I really want to compile a book of articles, documents, and other
information containing research supporting Chiropractic.  But after
realizing that a lot of people have already done that, I decided not to
re-invent the wheel but to hopefully find this from people who have
already done this. Is there an organization in Chiropractic that has compiled many
medical and chiropractic studies supporting Chiropractic and has this
information readilly available for request or purchase?
