Q: How much should I sell my practice for? A: The question you have concerning selling a practice and patient records has many formulas of which I am unfamiliar with. I know .. I should know this .. and you¼re right I should .. but math is my weakest subject and when you place five numbers together I get dizzy. Nonetheless .. let¼s see. If you take your gross collections (checks and cash) for the last 12 months and calculate that as your selling price you are close to the correct figure less selling equipment. This fee includes any past records. If there are outstanding insurance checks (receivables) this can be calculated in as well. Remember .. if you have a practice with active patients and momentum as far as telephone number, sign, goodwill etc. .. it is worth something and the turn key out of the box possibility for the new doctor to recoup his/her money is easier. Therefore, estimate this to start. As with all contacts and negotiations, the other party may try to lessen the selling price but hold to your guns as it¼s all supply and demand. If there is a demand with little supply you have the upper hand .. again .. this is not an empty office space and attempting to start fresh .. this is an active practice ready to take off when you leave. I recommend you hire an attorney to draw up the contract so you are clear as to what is what .. I also wouldn¼t want to finance the sale .. if this is the case and the doctor is not successful he/she defaults .. goes bankrupt and you are left ewith nothing .. even going back to the practice to help it get going again will be tough. Dr. Willis from the school has a business of helping buying and selling practices (I think) .. you may wish to contact him .. 770-429-0707 Hope this helps .. Have a Great Day Dr. M
