Patient Classes During my recent healthcare class, I was happy to see my attentive audience of patients and guests were asking many questions. As usual, my PowerPoint program, outlining my philosophy of chiropractic, responsibilities of doctor and patient and the nature of getting and staying well, was just a stepping stone for my embellished retort on the nature of healthcare within our society. I also outlined the difference between Health and Wellness versus Sickness and Disease. As I wandered from issue to issue, a number of patients raised their hands and challenged me. One concern was when to seek an alternative approach towards health rather than traditional medicine. Another wondered why children needed chiropractic care and wouldnıt it be dangerous. The third was quite assured that medical care was necessary and chiropractic was nothing more than a glorified massage. Fine, what better an audience, some inquisitive folks and a few skeptics. My patient and community classes always have an edge. Rather than providing a simplified thirty minute discussion of what chiropractic is, I go on and on while I probe their mindset on disease care and slip in a few health and wellness concepts to make them think. This usually stimulates questions similar to what we had when we first started chiropractic school and our mind changed from patient to chiropractor. We also challenged our teachers, I know I did, but with further investigation we placed more weight on their thinking as proof was had for the asking. Our patients never asked these questions to their medical professionals. They took their medication, opted for surgery, accepted their impairments and limitations and reacted to their emotional roller coaster by taking mood- altering meds to coast even more. Hardly anyone questioned their physicians resulting in a society of legal drug addicts and surgery survivors. Does this mean I belittle the medical profession and scorn the evils of drugs and surgery, no, but I lay out a foundation of health and wellness and the rules to maintain it. I acknowledge that poor choices and physiology may beset sickness and disease but by outlining the wonders of their body, there now appears rays of hope. Add weight to your classes by outlining the purpose of the nervous system, the role of biomechanics and posture and how easily poor work and social habits can affect the matrix of nerve and vascular flow. It is our obligation as chiropractors, guardians of structure and physiological function to lead your classes through the maze of dysfunction and into function and wellness. Outline the wonders of the body, the mechanics of structure and function and the role chiropractic plays to keep this vital relationship working in tandem. Review your conservative techniques, rehabilitative and nutritional programs and the role of doctor and patient. Impress on them that repetition and momentum is vital with physical health care, in other they must follow their schedule. Stress the importance of sharing this information with others and how further education only enhances their chances of staying well. So, begin by creating a number of programs. Topics that are buttons are stress, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches, neck and lower back pain and more. Include your expertise possibly exercise and nutrition, aging gracefully, children and health and more. PowerPoint is an easy program to master and graphics are free via the MS webpage so there is no excuse to keep your knowledge a secret. Build your practice with patient and community workshops. If you are too lazy or have no inclination to create these PowerPoint workshops or spend a few bucks for a laptop computer and projector, then use charts or plain old handouts but get the message out. Our educational and consulting vendors usually have programs for sale. I have a number of PowerPoint classes for sale as well and at a reasonable price. If interested just reply to: joel3639@aol.com for titles and prices. I hope to have them listed on my webpage shortly. Have a Great Day Dr. M Dr. Joel E. A new adjusting technology developed by Dr. Tedd Koren permits Chiropractors to better fulfill their potential as healers. Doctors can analyze and correct subluxations specifically to a greater degree than ever before. ³You know exactly where and in what order to adjust; you cannot over-adjust. A table isnıt needed in most cases as you can check and adjust standing, sitting, lying or in position of injury/pain. Doctors hurting from giving adjustments will find KST a great relief. Patients usually see dramatic results immediately and they hold better,² says Dr. Koren. ³Easily and quickly check and adjust the cranials, sutures, TMJ, hyoid, meningeal fibers, spine, discs, hips, sternum, ribs, femur heads, shoulders and anything else that the body says need correcting. There are no modules you get everything on one seminar. ³If the skull is subluxated the cervicals will not hold, if the ribs are subluxated the thoracics will not hold. If the discs are ³out² the spine wonıt hold etc. With KST adjustments hold longer and patients often get postural immediate changes. Youıll get dramatic results and see retracing a measure of true healing.² One of the most unique aspects of this technique is that the practitioner can specifically check and adjust himself/herself. Dr. Koren is teaching KST in Atlanta Nov. 11/12. Go to: www.teddkorenseminars.com or call 800-537-3001 to register.
