Patient Awareness You cannot belabor this point enough, but an educated patient is apt to follow their schedule, pay on their account, refer their family and friends and generally receive the best results from their chiropractic experience. So it's truly a shame that the average chiropractor provides limited resources for their patients and staff leaving them with limited knowledge and responsibility. It's no wonder the average practice is always hunting for new patients rather than maintaining a healthy practice with referrals and maintenance patients. But not so, if patients rely solely on the slim pickens of patient education you may provide. We are no different when purchasing a new techno toy. If you are like me, you probably ravage through the instructions looking for clues to benefit the most from your purchase. Use computer software as an example; the average owner uses no more than 15% of its potential, but while observing a wizard at work, it blows you away with how much more would be accomplished if you extended your knowledgebase and how much easier life would be if you took the time to learn. Why not a chiropractic patient? How much easier it would be for them to hold their adjustments, participate if various office and chiropractic community events and better yet, feel as if they are teaming with you by telling the chiropractic story to their neighbors, fellow church members and workmates. But, if there has not been a value placed on spinal health and the purpose of chiropractic care, why would they follow through with maintenance care once the pain subsides or ever refer anyone in? If they didn't sit through your spinal care class and/or received a knee to knee introduction of their spine, why would they feel compelled to change their posture with proper ergonomics and adjusting their daily life and consider proper stretch exercises and your treatment plan unless they were excited about the possibility of increasing their potential and living their life with managed or no pain? So, don't expect referrals or the phone jumping off the hook if your actions and null and void. Trust me, if you look to the left and right during your next association meeting, these folks are probably slackers leaving more people for us to introduce our story of Health and Wellness. Hope you look in the mirror and don't see a slacker and about your staff Have a Great Day Dr. M Postings this week: Dr. Joel E. Germany is better than most. Because there a DC can take an examination to be a "Health Practitioner" (Heilpraktiker or HP) and legally practice. This is similar to foreign trained MDs who can practice in the US if they pass a special exam. In most other countries in Europe however DCs can be fined or jailed for practicing. The HP profession is over 100 years old and is recognized as a health care profession by the government and courts. The HP exam is not easy (it has a failure rate of up to 85%) and the exam includes a lot of medical subjects Ð just like chiropractic boards. A few DCs (to serve 85 million people) have taken the exam. The 35,000 HPs are permitted to perform "manipulations" but many aren't well trained in it. They must take advanced training. When I was asked to teach KST at the Berlin HP school (which offers advanced classes to licensed HPs) we investigated the legalities and ethics involved and decided it was ethical, moral and legal to teach KST there. One Hamburg DC told me, "They really need you here. Many HPs don't manipulate well and even hurt people. KST would help many people and even save lives." For decades the GCA (German Chiropractic Association), ECU (European Chiropractors Union) and World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC) have been ineffective in advancing chiropractic in Germany. The GCA has even refused to work with the HP profession. I saw my presence as a way of promoting chiropractic there; the powerful HP profession could be a great ally. However the GCA and ECU demanded I cancel my seminar! They claimed I was teaching "lay-practitioners." We did a further investigation and found that HPs were duly licensed professionals. We told our critics what we found and urged them to provide any evidence to the contrary. We received none. I'd like to see chiropractic recognized throughout Europe and feel that I am helping move this process forward by building bridges instead of walls with the established healthcare professions. In the 70 years the ECU has existed the status of chiropractic in Europe has remained fairly static. What was done in Berlin when I was there? Please go to :www.teddkorenseminars.com click on "articles." The ones in red discuss this. First read, "What's Going On In Europe?" to get an overview of the situation.
